I read a lot of posts and heard a lot of comments about Choppers Inc. Billy Lane’s tragic story. I didn’t intend to publish anything about it, but a lot of people have been asking what I think of Billy. So here is my first and last public comment about him. At some point in our lives, we all make mistakes with more or less consequence. Billy made some bad decisions, none of which he can take back. Billy, his friends, family & Gerald Morelock’s friends & family will all have to live with this tragedy for the rest of their lives. I personally know Billy from a time when he was a new builder and was still unknown in the motorcycle industry. Public image can be quite different from reality. I consider Billy a brother of my industry, a fellow builder, and I won’t kick a brother when he is down. Unfortunately, Billy cannot erase this accident. I am however convinced that as soon as it will be possible for him to do so, Billy will act proactively to turn the lesson of this tragedy into a positive message for others.

Hey Huze, you’re obviously biased. This was no accident or mistake. Lane is an irresponsible jerk that commited a crime. And hey sure as hell ain’t no “bro”. He can’t even step up and man up to what he did. So you can join all the other Billy-Butt-Kissers out there that make me and other real riders sick.
L.A. Rider, of course Cyril is biased, he says he’s known him for a long time. I don’t think Cyril denies the fact that what Billy is irresponsible nor that he deserves paying for this crime.
I wrote that it’s a tragedy for everybody involved. The only difference between you & me is that I know Billy. It doesn’t make any difference for his responsibilty. What I meant is that you never wish that it happens to somebody you know (Billy or the victim). Billy will have very soon his day in court (1st hearing is October 27th here in Florida). Justice will be done like it would be for you or me.
Do you really think that unknown people would have left the hospital and go home, wait two weeks for BAC resultss from FDLE, FHP call your attorney of record and let you turn yourself in at your leisure and can afford four lawyers to hold your hand while being booked and get out of jail without going to a cell in 90 minutes? Somehow…..I doubt it. Sure people feel sorry for Billy…but Billy is a big boy and Billy knew that North Carolina Highway Patrol took his Florida Drivers license when he was pulled over in North Carolina for being in what??? Billy Lane was on the wrong side of the highway again. Only in Florida he killed somebody. I guess if you are Billy’s friend you do not think Billy’s actions have conquenses. I am not somebody who wants to tar and feather Billy but he was in the wrong. What if he ran over one of your loved ones? I don’t think I would brag about knowing him. I am not so sure he is a brother. We do not ride drunk down the wrong side of a two lane highway without our helmet when it is the law there. I sure would not have been behind the wheel drunk and without license. Billy will not be in court on October 27th because his attorneys filed a request for jury trial, he plead NOT GUILTY and waived his first appearance. I think Billy was afraid and not man enough to stand up in a courtroom and say NOT GUILTY.
I agree with you on everything except that I cannot say today that I don’t know him because of what happened He is a fellow builder and I have appreciated him as such. Most people of my industry would tell you the same. It’s the reason why we are saddened. I know nothing about the strategies of his lawyers, but I guess Billy follows the advice given to him.
Look at that guy in the picture…tough guy…Big Bad Billy with his bad tattoos. He can’t even man up to his actions. Big contradiction here. The tough guy who gets Jack Daniels poured down his throat while doing a burnout with his bike is afraid to do his time for killing a man. Lane is nothing but a poser and regardless of the outcome of his case, he loses all respect and has brought the whole custom bike industry down just because he could think of nobody but himself.
Cyril, you create some beautiful bikes but you’re on the wrong side of the angels here. First of all, this was not a “mistake” or an “accident”. Billy has been drinking and driving for years. The only question was would Billy kill himself before he killed an innocent person? Actually, it is already possible for Billy to do so – he is choosing not to. Cyril, you are attempting to support him, but look at the facts:
1. North Carolina Police reported Billy Lane was pulled over for driving on the wrong side of the highway, not wearing a helmet and refusing to submit to a BAC test. His fame and expensive lawyers got him out of that DUI, while the odds of a “typical” citizen not being conviced of a DUI in those circumstances are near zero.
2. He refused to take a BAC test after he killed Mr. Morelock in Florida, but the state would not allow him to refuse. His BAC was .192
3. After the fatality, the Choppers Inc website was immediately “sanitized” and the photos of Billy with alcohol were removed.
4. He issued no statement.
5. He plead not guilty.
6. It would appear that he intends to hide behind his expensive lawyers and see if he can get away with this one too. It would also appear that he simply does not care how much additional suffering he inflicts on his victim’s family, he simply cares for himself.
Cyril, you know him – Is there anything at all that he has done in this process other than hide behind his fame, money, and lawyers like a coward and cause more suffering to his victims family? Anything at all which could be construed as demonstrating some sort of value system, integrity or sense of honor? I believe that since Billy Lane has demonstrated such a complete lack of regard for his fellow man and conducted himself as a coward afterwards – the best outcome would be for him to serve substantial prison time to be an example that even if you are famous and have expensive lawyers, if you habitually drive drunk and then kill someone you’ll have to pay the price.

Mike, you make a compelling case and I agree with you. What I try to say since the beginning is that Billy is a nice guy who made terrible decisions: drinking and riding/driving with the consequences we know. What I hear & read is that people feel that because of fame & money he will get out of this. So, I guess the debate is about how much we trust our justice system. I think that Billy, like anyone, should pay for his mistakes. And I think he will.
How much faith do I have in our justice system? When it comes to names with money, not much. I.E. O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake et al Instead of spending and wasting the hundreds of thousands on legal help, Lane should be a man and compensate the Morelock family and do his time for the crime that he commited. Huze, why don’t you try talking some sense into your “bro”.
Cyril, I must give you a lot of credit for just making a comment on Billy Lane’s legal problems. You are the “ONLY” builder to make any comment. I must commend you. I have tried to get Paul Sr. of OCC to comment and had no such luck. Same for Jesse James. I think that there is a strong possibility that the BIKE BUILDERS want to stay as far away as they can from Billy Lane and Choppers Inc. We live in the USA and are allowed our opinions. Seems on this subject one either hopes that Mr. Lane gets off the criminal charges and that it goes away for him. The other side wants him to answer for his actions as any common citizen. If he does not have any conquenses for his actions on our highways I doubt that the civil suit will just go away. Choppers, Inc. says business as usual. I received a E-Mail from Bruce Rossemeyer regarding Biketoberfest it said Billy Lane would be there with a booth and signing autographs. Do you think there will be long adoring lines OR do you think Billy will decide to just stay home and continue as if nothing has happened?? One thing for sure Billy can not get on a chopper and do a burn out while Jack Daniels is being poured down his throat. If so and somebody gets a picture Billy will go straight to jail and not pass go because it is a violation of his bond. That means most likely he would be a guest at Brevard County jail till the criminal trial. Billy can not drive…..hense North Carolina has his Florida drivers license and they are suspended. One can see Bily did not care about not having license when he ran into Mr. Morelock on his interstate legal bike. If Billy was not driving after a day of partying and get in his loaner truck with suspended license we would not be having this debate. Billy showed disregard for the law. I agree with you, I think Billy will pay for his mistakes. I think the FHP made sure everything was done correctly. I think they crossed all t’s and dotted every i. Chain of command on the blood was followed to a t. My money is on FHP!! Besides that I heard that his lawyer Mr. Funk is not HOLLYWOOD good.
While I’m sure that Lane has his loyal followers that still want to see him no matter what he does, he would have to be a pure bonehead not to realize that any pub;lic appearance by him now would be straight disrespect for the Morelock family. Those close to Lane should offer him some guidance on the matter of guest appearances. Until he mans up to his crime, I for one do not want to be on the same road with Lane let alone at a bike event.
LA Rider, why dont you leave your name so we can dig up on you. I’m sure your not as rightous as you lead yourself to be. Everyone has heard what you have to say. Some agree, some disagree. You are being hypocritical now because you act like your a saint. Billy will face justice in court and in the eyes of god. The tragedy is that because of a terrible decision, TWO families are in shambles. I have met billy and his parents and his parents are good christians. God be with all involved
THAT’S WHERE YOU’RE WRONG BIKER T… i ain’t no saint, but I never killed a man…drunk or otherwise. And as far as Lane facing justice goes, well, are you to blind to see what’s happening? Lane has money, and he’s using it to AVOID justice. Lane commited a crime. He should man up to it. The Morelocks are seeking compensation. Instead of paying specialists and lawyers, Lane shouls pay the family of the man he killed. Is Lane innocent? If so, he’s doing the right thing. If not, he’s doing exactly what fake wannabe poser of a biker would do.
Looks like we are going to hear that Billy Lane was not driving. On the witness list presented by Kepler Funk on Billy Lane’s behalf Erin L. Derrick is listed as a witness. Go to MNO speaks web site to read more on the surprise witness. Justice is not the same for everybody. Already the State’s Attorney has dropped two of the charges. Billy had no license and that charge was dropped. The civil law firm representing Billy Lane and is being paid by Chrysler has already filed a motion to dismiss the Morelock families lawsuit. Billy is just going on like nothing has happened.

As a matter of fact, last week I had a professional of the industry in my office and we were developing together the exact same concepts. I also just shared your words with my close collaborators and they also congratulate you for the quality and objectivity of your thoughts. I would really like to meet with you. I must agree with Smiley as well. His comment was spoke well and correctly. It is by far one of the best and most objective. I would sit down with my 21 year old daughter and have that conversation. I commend you for taking the time to express your thoughts. Cyril you are the only Builder to comment and that indeed says a lot about you and your morals.

Thanks for the comments ……..With all the controversy surrounding this issue i’m glad to offer an alternative perspective. Tradgedy often times transforms itself into something positive…..I’ts our sincere hope that in this case we’ll all see proof of that in some form or another …. whatever way it plays out.Our family extends its sincere condolences to all partys involved. I think that Smiley’s comments were very well stated and reasoned.
However, I think that the one factor missing in his analysis is that the very behavior that got Mr. Lane in trouble is the key brand characteristic essential to promoting the “biker lifestyle” brand on TV that the draws the interest from the masses.
Do you really think that people would travel from miles around to buy t-shirts from Jesse James’ shop in Long Beach if there wasn’t some sense of guilty pleasure in being part of the “outlaw” lifestyle? They are not buying it just because it has a cool logo on it. Buy wearing a West Coast Choppers t-shirt they are making a statement, however thin and loosely based on reality, that they identify with the “outlaw” mythology, lifestyle, and attitude, even though it’s probably a far cry from their actual lifestyle. They are buying into a little bit of fantasy.
The only difference between Jesse James and Billy Lane is that Jesse created an entire mythology of being an “outlaw” by his very thin family lineage to actual outlaw Jessie James of Western lore and from hanging around with various outlaw types in Long Beach. As far as actual “outlaw” lifestyle, besides his tattoos, he couldn’t be further from an outlaw bike builder. He refers to himself a “welder”, not a master builder or media entrepreneur, and he tries to maintain his roots and identity in the blue collar lifestyle. Even though he doesn’t demonstrate any characteristics of an “outlaw” biker at all, somehow his WCC brand has been able to endure as a signature for wannabe chopper badasses and kids everywhere. If you are seeking role models, you couldn’t find a better, more sanitized “outlaw” biker than Jesse James. He has somehow been able to hold onto this image while becoming a role model for kids, re-introducing America to the value of the blue-collar industrial arts, creating educational materials on the history of hot rods and choppers via his television shows, documentary film and now his involvement with magazines. And all the while not displaying any outward lifestyle characteristics of a classic outlaw biker, like drinking, womanizing and doing smoky burnouts while having Jack Daniels poured down his throat.
Billy Lane on the other hand not only continued to be an actual “bike builder” building actual bikes, but he also lived the outlaw lifestyle in plain view of the public. He wasn’t trying to be a bad-boy outlaw biker, he WAS a bad-boy outlaw biker. While Jesse James stopped travelling to bike shows and interacting with the public (along with not building bikes anymore), Billy Lane continued to come to shows, and actually built bikes and rode them…and drunk heavily, womanized and generally partied like an outlaw biker. He should also be credited with helping to promote careers in welding and the bike industry through his Blood, Sweat and Gears tour, doing demonstration builds in front of audiences, and taking questions and generally interacting with the people. He could have chosen to fade into the role of a businessman and entrepreneur like Jesse James, creating extensions of his brand through television and other media, but he pretty much loved the lifestyle, the people and the bikes and the partying. If he didn’t have the name and TV show, he would have been like probably dozens of other hard-partying drinking-and-driving bikers at any one of these events. His tragic flaw was not realizing that by becoming a media star he also became a role model whether he liked the title or not. His unwillingness to change his lifestyle and tastes to accommodate this responsibility of being a role model was his undoing and led to the situation today.
I’ve never met either of these guys, but I’ve seen, heard and watched enough from the sidelines to at least have an informed opinion. I may be full of shit, but I find the whole outlaw biker mythology as promoted and ultimately beaten to death by Discovery Channel to be a really interesting study in our ideas about identity and the fantasy of the freedom of the biker “lifestyle”.
I agree that it’s 100% inexcusable for Mr. Lane to not have at least made some kind of a statement about the situation to his public, but I can guarantee that his lawyers have banned him from doing so.
Like most mentioned above, he deserves every bit of punishment he receives and we can only hope that at the end of it all that he channels his energy into a constructive public service campaign about drinking and driving. None of that will bring the victim back or bring his family any consolation though.
Willy………well stated…..i completely agree with your overall analogy……with one exception……..I have …in the past and even now for that matter known what you call bad boy outlaw bikers and for what its worth…….Mr Lane is as far from the real hardcore deal as its possible to be. He is however the “NEW” media version of the term ” Outlaw”. Where i come from the bad boys dont wear Sha Sha shoes and dreadlocks , designer wrist watches and bling bling jewlery……………but then thats just an observation from my side of the fence….that said …i think your comments are pretty much in tune with what alot of us are thinking regarding a certain percentage of the current crop of Icons and Heros of the chopper world…..I’d be particularly interested in knowing what the real Icons like Arlen ,Mondo, Donnie Smith , Ron Finch , Ron Simms to name a few are thinking about the current state of affairs and the image of the industry as it stands today in general ……… regards Smiley.

Although I don’t necessarely agree with some statements, both of you posted very interesting and intelligent comments. I wish that all posts in my blog reach the level of quality of yours. I would like to add one point about the builders mentioned. Jesse James & Billy Lane. As you can imagine, I know them, have traveled with them, have worked my booth next to them in shows, exhibition, rallies, here and abroad. In private, both are very nice & polite persons and I have always enjoyed seeing & being with them. Perception is sometimes very different from reality. All builders have a very different background, have a very different lifestyle during private times, behave differently front of the camera, build different style of bikes, etc. But we all appreciate & respect each other because we share the same love for custom motorcycles. It’s the beauty of our profession: to unite us through the same passion. In interviews, I often state that motorcycles are the greatest equalizer. On the road, we are all the same whatever our social status, our profession, our bike, our religion, our color, our national origin, etc. Front of a bike professional builders share the same emotions, hesitations, joys, frustration, joys again. Maybe now you better understand the meaning of my 1st post. It was about the sadness that such a tragedy brought to us. It was not about the facts of this tragedy. It was about tomorrow. I am still convinced that when it will be possible for him, Billy will turn all this in a positive message for all of us. All bikers should wish the same..
No matter how we shake a stick at this mess Billy has got himself into, we can not judge other people. We live in a modern day cast system and if you are in trouble and can afford a high priced, high powered lawyer that is most definitely the way to go. I am disappointed Jesse did not make any comment on this subject. I really did not expect Paul Teutel from OCC to make a comment. I did not burn CHOP FICTION. Billy personalized it to me and autographed the book. Nor did I throw away my “cutie” tops. That is childish. Many people can be in the same kind of trouble on any given night. I just wish Billy would have made some kind of a comment. Then…I thought I probably would not say anything. I read the FHP narrative of the accident and it was “chilling”. Those two kids that were coming home from a soccer game with their mother in the lead car that was being passed will forever have this horrific fatal accident etched in their mind. I doubt they will want to ride a Harley, feel the wind in their hair and sun on their face. That is “SAD”! Possibly the Chopper Builders do not comment because they want to distance their business far from Billy Lane. I know Billy’s parents. My daughter has sliced meat for them at Publix and waited on them at a cafe. His parents came in for breakfast and were on their bike. My daughter goes my Mom has a Fatboy then they told her they were Billy’s parents. My little college girl was so thrilled!!! They are good people and nice to wait on. I am sure they love their son and are proud of his sucess. One can not ever take away the fact that Billy Lane is a smart and well educated person. Shoot me but I liked some of his choppers but no way could I ever afford to buy one!!!!!
Not all people who ride are "OUTLAWS"!!! We have doctors, lawyers rednecks and there is no such thing as expecting a certain type to ride. Just look at all the "DIFFERENT" bikes on the highways.
Huze, you’ve said more than once that Lane will turn all this into a positive message. Well, I can’t think of one thing that he could do that might be considered positive at this point. He had his chance as a spotlight builder to be a positive force for the custom bike industry. He had another chance when he got caught up with the law for drunk driving in NC. But Lane apparently can’t think of anything or anybody but himself. He blew it. The best thing he can do for the bike industry now is fade quickly into obscurity, regardless of the outcome of his case.
In other words, Billy Lane should not become a bigger celebrity and make more money as some kind of poster boy spokesman against drunk driving. Lane’s word or endorsement of anything isn’t worth spit to me until he mans up to what he did.
Do “ANY” of you posters on this blog “REALLY” think that Billy Lane will have reputable companies sponsor him? I DON”T THINK SO.Dodge must be kicking themselves hard. Look at their liability exposure with this Lane accident.Parents are most likely not buying the T-shirts, ballcaps/books,beanies and so forth at CHOPPERS.INC. Besides that his items are more expensive than BRUCE ROSSEMEYERS HARLEY DEALERSHIPS. That’s sort of a joke. I doubt parents here are taking their kids in his store. Even if Billy is lucky I think his business has suffered severe revenues losses due to this accident. People must remember this accident was not on National News, little said on the radio and not much in the Florida newspaper. The people in the Melbourne area and the surrounding counties hear and see what is reported to the news. People in other states know nothing. I am having problems with the State of Florida’s Assistant District County dropping the charges regarding Lane’s drivers license suspension. To this date Lane’s Florida Drivers License are in Rowan County town of Salisbury, North Carolina’s possession. Lane must go thru North Carolina’s counter measure classes for DUI and attend AA and of course pay probation fees and then he must also pay North Carolina a reinstatement fee to get his driver’s license back. Norh Carolina is the suspending state. Thaaaaat must be done before Florida ever reinstates the drivers license here. Now all state’s have access to other states Drivers License bureau. You can hide a DUI or DWI. I remember the day Kentucky could susspend your drivers license and one could cross the Ohio River and get Ohio drivers license. NO MORE. What would you do in this situation, I bet you would do everything in your power to stay out of jail as is Billy is trying to do. Agreed LA RIDER. It is the Americian way to save our butt!!!! I live in Sebastian, Florida. Choppers Inc. is about 22 miles north of me. I must say that when Billy is in the shop he is friendly and talks to everyone. He is well liked because he is down to earth. I do not believe that he charged mpney for his autographs at Bruce Rossemeyer’s. He signs anything you buy for free. I have copies of his “CHOP FICTION” that he personalized and autographed for Christmas. I must say that I really like Billy’s employees. I love Gina. She will go hunt and dig for any item you want if it is there. Billy goes to local places so most likely people have crossed paths with him and have spoke to him. Billy just made a terrible mistake.

I live in the same county as Billy and I read and listen with interest on any updates on the case. My sincerest sympathies go out to the Morelock family. With two big holidays around the corner I’m sure this is a particularly hard time for them.
I have ZERO sympathy for Billy. He broke all the rules resulting in the death of an innocent man. The issue came up this week that Mr. Morelock was impaired as well – and yes, I agree, he should not have been on the road as either. However, his little bike was no match for Billy’s HUGE Dodge, period. Oh and guess what – Mr. Morelock didn’t kill anyone prior to being dismembered and killed on his little two lane hometown stretch of road. Billy was not just breaking ONE law, he was breaking them all. And from what I understand it was all in the name of getting a little piece of a$$.
As for Erin Derrick being on the defense’s witness list, I wouldn’t count on it. You see, we can look any resident’s traffic or criminal record on our Brevard County Clerk of Courts website. Little Miss Erin has quite an extensive criminal traffic rap-sheet for the length of her short driving career. Two of the big ones being driving on a suspended license herself, AND just last summer (2005) a DUI. I’m no attorney but I have a feeling all her credibility flies right out the window with that blight on her record. After all, DUI/Non-capital Murder is the major issue here.
Billy’s lawyers have earned their money keeping Billy out of court and jail, and spending not only Billy’s money to do so but us taxpayer’s as well by delaying court dates etc, and creating more red tape within the system. I’m really praying Billy is shown no mercy as he showed none to Mr. Morelock or any other biker on the road by setting foot in his Loaner Dodge drunk that Labor Day evening and driving so agressively.
I understand he’ll have his day in court, and some of you think “who am I to judge?”. Well as far as I’m concerned he’s as guilty as the day is long – especially after the circumstances of the scene of the crime came out. A man is dead because of his criminal actions – no need for a day in court to convince me of that.

Neither should have Billy…with a suspended license he shouldn’t have been driving at all…and crossing a double yellow (illegal pass)…and speeding. And driving a massive killing machine. However, I doubt if Erin, the stripper, was any more sober than Billy was that night. So taking the keys from him probably wasn’t an option. Given her driving record, she is as much of a danger on the roads as Billy is. I’m sure Billy could have afforded a cab way more than Mr. Morelock could have.
Your mentality scares me because I think this is just the defense they are going to take…the victim deserved it. Well, I don’t think he did deserve to die so horribly, just because Billy wanted his piece of a$$ quicker. Billy knew those roads like you know the roads you drive everyday, and should have known those laws were in place for a reason. I live in Melbourne, and have two stepsons that travel that stretch of road on a regular basis to go fishing in Sebastian Inlet. If Billy had mowed down either one of them that night, I would want to see justice served, and would work hard to make that happen. I don’t think I’m a vindictive person either, but I believe Billy is continuing his partying ways and this tragedy hasn’t affected him at all. I don’t know him either, but I found it interesting that Erin’s myspace account was also deleted just after the accident…after she showed pics of her and Billy in a bar the week of his arrest.
He might be a ‘really nice guy’ but he has screwed up badly. I guess it’s human nature to save yourself, but I am losing some faith in the justice system, when money allows you to avoid the consequences of your actions.

Lock em up: I agree with ABSOLUTELY everything you said. Most people lost faith in the justice system when OJ Simpson got off murdering his ex-wife and her friend. Then people lost even more faith when Robert Blake got off. Yes, indeed Billy Lane knew that stretch of A1A like the back of his hand. Gerry Morelock knew that stretch of A1A too. I want Billy Lane to answer in a court of law the same as you and I would. I just do not begrudge him because he can afford to hire a legal team. Everybody go to the site MNO SPEAKS and click on Last comments and look at Billy Lane flipping the bird to everyone. He is sitting on a chopper and flips the bird under it states to all you billy haters!!! It has been reported that the decedent in the case and Gerry Morelock had in his system a blood-alcohol content of .133 when he was killed. Billy Lane had in his system a blood-alcohol content of .192 at the time that he crashed into Gerry Morelock.
Michael Odom has asked me to comment on how the fact that Gerry Morelock had a blood alcohol content of .133 may affect the case one way or another.
The fact that the decedent, Mr. Morelock, was legally intoxicated should have no consequences on the criminal or civil aspects of the case based upon the evidence I have read so far. There is no evidence that Mr. Morelock did anything to cause the crash in which he was killed, and he had the right of way in the lane that he was in.
Unless some witness comes forward and says that it was Morelock who swerved into Billy Lane’s lane, I do not see any problems with any of the cases.
Mr. Morelock it appears was legally drunk. However, he still had a right not to be killed on a Public Highway due to the negligence of another.
I once did a case for a woman who was legally drunk with six kids in her van. She was rear ended and injured by a guy in a truck. She was arrested and convicted for DUI after the accident.
I obtained a large settlement for her in a civil case because she was not at fault in the rear end accident. I am sure the same thing will happen in the Billy Lane Case.
I am sure that everyone remembers the OJ case, and the Robert Blake case. There is no doubt that the defense will try to attack Mr. Morelock anyway they can. Unfortunately it’s easy to attack someone who is no longer alive to defend themselves. This may have some affect on the jury. In the end we will see.
There is no doubt in my mind based upon the evidence that I have read that Gerry Morelock would still be alive today but not for the actions of Billy Lane. However I must state, that in this country everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Ultimately it will be up to a jury of his peers to determine whether Billy Lane is guilty in the criminal case and liable for damages in the civil case.
I will soon write an article on the potential liability of Dodge Corp. with respect to negligent entrustment.

Although Mr. Morelock was legally drunk, he had the right not to be killed on a Public Highway due to the negligence of another. However, this appears to be a possible 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) lesson to be learned here: reaction times are increased under the influence. If there is any chance of performing evasive maneuvers to avoid a head on collision, there are decreased dramitically under the influence. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. My heart goes out to the moorlock family. God bless you.
I’m not going to condemn Billy for this bad judgement, for I have done some pretty stupid things in life myself. ESPECIALLY under the influence.

The tort of negligent entrustment in simple language means that you were negligent by allowing a person or persons to use your property such as a car, motorcycle, etc.
Negligence is a legal term of art. It would be very difficult to explain negligence to a non-attorney. However I will try.
Negligence in simple language, is that one person owes a duty of due care to another person, and breaches that duty of due care thus causing damages. The key to negligence is that it must be reasonably foreseeable to an ordinary prudent person that the conduct will result in damages. I will be frank, negligence is much more complicated than the description I just gave, however it will suffice for the purposes of this article.
An example of simple negligence would be one person not paying attention and rear ending another person in their car. The person who did the rear ending would be liable in most circumstances for negligence.
With respect to negligent entrustment, I will give you an example of where you could be held liable for this tort. Let’s say you loan your car to a person who has a suspended driver’s license. Let’s say this person subsequently gets into a car accident. You would most likely be held liable for the damages caused in the accident, because you owed a duty of due care to ensure that you did not loan your car to a person with a suspended driver’s license. In other words, you were negligent by allowing a person with a suspended drivers license to use your car.
Another example would be loaning your car to a person who was obviously intoxicated, who then subsequently gets into an accident. You can be held liable for negligent entrustment for loaning you car to a drunk.
There is a vast array of possible scenarios in which you could be liable for the tort of negligent entrustment. It’s not rocket science, it’s really about common sense. The purpose of this article is just to make you aware of the tort.
Basically it’s a matter of common sense. If you are going to loan a person your car, motorcycle, or other property, you better make sure they have a driver’s license and automobile insurance before you give them the keys unless you’re not concerned about being legally liable for their actions.
I then wrote a response to Sandie with regards to the Billy Lane and the Dodge case as follows:
A common ploy in DUI cases is for persons to refuse to submit to a breath test or blood test because they know they are either drunk or under the influence of a controlled substance. In California failing to submit to a breath test is an automatic license suspension. The same probably holds true for other States as well. I am only licensed to practice law in California, and before the United States Court Central District, (Federal Court) therefore I am not going to comment on another States laws.
The bottom line is that no one should loan a car, truck, motorcycle, or any other motor vehicle to a person with a suspended license because it would be negligent to do so. Hence, Dodge is being sued in the Billy Lane Case!
It goes beyond that! Let’s say that Lane did not have a suspended license but he had a history of moving violations or negligent driving. Dodge could also be held liable for negligent entrustment if they loaned a car or truck to a person with a known history of bad driving! That is what the duty of due care is! Each person has a duty of due care to do what a reasonable person would do under similar circumstances. Is it reasonable to loan your car to someone without checking them out?
It will up to a Court and a Jury to decide!

Who is Billy”s gang friends? Who is his best friend that is a convicted drug dealer? Is the friend in jail and dealing drugs from jail? Who was shot dead and by the girlfriend? I agree that Dodge should have checked out who they loaned their trucks too and checked on them monthly to make sure that the person they loaned their trucks to had valid drivers license. Hense, read the above article by Esquire Norm Fernandez…..a good read that hopefully will make people think before they give somebody keys to their cars. Who works in Billy’s shop that is so bad?? not really sure why i’m responding to this forum or even reading it because i absolutely hate how everyone on the internet always plays judge, jury and executioner. most people who post online typically think they are right and everyone else is wrong, or they are just full of stupidity and ignorance (ie larider/sandie), they tend to just speak before they think. i don’t think anyone here knows all the info of this situation other than what they have read about it. obviously, the major fact is undisputable. billy broke several laws and inadvertanly killed a man. i’m going to come out and say that billy lane has always been my favorite bike builder and i have had the opportunity to meet him a few years back. his fate is not for me to decide or even speculate about. jail,rehab,community involvement,parole,donating money,public speaking and/or compensating the victim’s family are possibilites for him and he should get whatever the courts decide. this is a terrible situation he has put himself in and i don’t feel sorry for him, but i do feel bad that he is going through this as i’m sure it has affected him in a very negative way. i just hope this type of life altering incident doesn’t drive him to drink more and act more foolishly in the future (if he stays out of jail or when he gets out). billy needs to use this terrible incident to help kick his bad habits and decision making. i won’t sit here and persecute a man for making such decisions to get into that truck and drive as i honestly don’t think he was in the right frame of mind to make such a decision. i don’t think he could decipher right from wrong at that moment in his alcohol induced state. regardless, he did do it. myself and probably almost everyone of my friends growing up, in college and even today have made the same choice at some point. i would be willing to bet just about everyone that has posted here has done the same. only difference is, we didn’t get caught doing it. it didn’t seem like such a bad decision at the time and we continued to do it because we never got caught. yeah, billy got caught before but never really got into any serious trouble until now. let’s remember too, that even though his license was suspended at the time, he had already gotten out of that charge in north carolina. today, i’m much more careful about driving after even having a few drinks as my priorities have changed and have a family of my own. one thing i do know and agree with one of the other writers in this forum, is that if this same situation happened to me, i would do everything i could to stay out of prison. i can’t imagine a worse fate than ending up there. i think if anyone says they disagree with trying to stay out of prison, they are just lieing to me and themselves. anyway, i’ve had friends who’ve had a dui and one of my friends lost his wife in a motorcycle accident. i’ve seen how these situations can affect people first hand. there’s no way you can imagine how billy or the victim’s family feel unless you’ve been through it. i feel bad for the family and i understand they are going through a lot of emotions right now and probably some hatred towards billy. he will never go another day of his life without remembering that accident, and yes it was an accident. even though bad choices were made, there is no way billy said, “hey erin, watch me drive into this guy and kill him”, it wasn’t cold blooded murder. i think you get what i’m saying. anyway, after a lot of rambling on, the point i’ really trying to make is before you open your mouth and say something, put yourself into that situation and think about it. let’s not stone anyone in this time, but mourn the lost and console the victims (both families). let’s let the court system figure out the best punishment, and at that time if you have something to say about the verdict, feel free to voice your opinion about that once all the dust has settled. no bad mouthing or anything else you say is going to change what happened. like i said before, i hope the vicim’s family is compensated accordingly and really hope billy will get himself the proper help he needs and changes some of his lifestyle because if he doesn’t, then we will see he really didn’t learn anything and should be locked up for life. thanks for taking the time to read long post.

I am/was a Billy lane fan and I agree that what he did was wrong and he should pay the price in jail. We have all done stupid things and fortunatly it did not involve killing anyone. Everyone on this page would agree that if they were in any sort of trouble they would spend any amount of money to stay out of jail – Billy just has a lot more of it than most of us and can afford to have 4 high powered, high priced lawyers. I think Billy should pay for what he did just as any of us would have to. Everyone in this blog makes very good points except for the Honda-Davidson rider L.A. RIDER you are just a friggin idiot.

A simple searc on google would have lead you to news paper articles where the D.A. and lead investigator explain why Billy was not immediately arrested. I’d explain it to you but this would be a good exercise in researching something before you post. I could not agree more with Cyril on this subject. Billy is also a friend of mine and always will be. The accident was a tragedy.

Seen the same kind of radical opining on other boards too. If it was my family, either family, I would want to clean Lane’s clock.
That isn’t about law or BAC or any of that crap, it’s about justice.
That Lane is fighting the charges is not about justice, it’s about law. Thing is there’s this mix of apples and oranges. He will pay for this crime. Not going to pay the price Gerald Morelock paid, but it’s going to come down to him paying hard.
Some of you don’t get the part where there is more than Lane paying. He’s a brand. The brand pays wages and commissions. People eat on those wages. The brand is defended by lawyers. The lawyers adopt a strategy for defending the brand and that’s all she wrote. It’s not guilty or innocent that drives the train, it’s the brand and what can be salvaged.
OK, I think he’s taking advantage of that cover. I read him as a guy that had talent and a holier than thou attitude. I figure that he was in the right place at the right time for success. Maybe not. Maybe he scraped and dug his way up and maybe he’s a noble cat and wants to be crucified for his sins but they got him muzzled. I don’t know. Either way, other people are making part or all of their livelihood on the brand and that will be defended as best as the law allows.
You can rant all day about stepping up, but this isn’t about stepping up. The crime is done, there’s blood been let and for the Lane lawyers it’s now about staunching the bleeding. Coldhearted, you betcha. That’s business.
I’m old school. No apologies for my past. I’m sorry that the evolution of a way of life came to this. But for crying out loud, Morelock now and Lane soon enough are just two more in a list of countless thousands who have paid for the sake of riding. What is different here is the celebrity. It was inevitable. Too much money and too much testerone. Personally I didn’t like the Lane mystique. I don’t have a taste for mass consumption of my way of life. It’s like rock and roll. It was all good until the normals embraced it. Now it’s just sad and formulaic and full of lawyers.
That may be but here’s the thing. This whole gig was not born out of suits and baptists toiling away in cookie cutter development garages with their Snap On boxes all polished up to create two wheeled screamers in their spare time. The guys that bred this came out of blood and guts and driving on the wrong side of every line they could. Custom bikes at the inception were THE statement of rejection of normal and legal and sober and the future.
You don’t have to emulate the men who chopped hawgs to spit in the face of convention or revere them and nobody needs to defend Billy Lane. But for sure, if you try to invoke some selective history where the Lane’s of the world are fringe outcasts and are outside the sphere of the custom bike community and you come off all righteous and indignant when some moke like Lane gets stupid and kills a citizen or, like Larry, kills himself, then I would guess you are swimming in the shallow end of a deep pool and you probably want to stay in the shallows because what’s below the surface isn’t going to be to your liking at all.
Pop I’ll give ya this much I wish I’d stayed out of this topic. Like you said every blog I’ve read on the topic, and I haven’t read all that many it gets real ugly. Point well taken on the branding and the fact that it is now a case of legal maneuvering.
for those interested,, Janklow from south dakota,, after speeding and running a stop sign,, have been cited for several flagrant violations of driving laws killed a motorcyclist,, and was sentenced to 100 days in prison,, and is now acting as a licensed attorney in south dakota,, and could not be sued,, as he states he was on government business,, again justice at work,,

Gee why get mad at me. I want Billy Lane to have his day in court but you must admit he is going on like nothing has happened. Just tonight on the WPTV 11 PM news, the guy who was drunk and killed two girls is still in jail. Family and friends showed up in full force and that drunks bail is $300,000 if my memory is correct. For sure it was a lot higher than Billy Lane’s and this drunk had no past drunk driving record and he had valid drivers license. I do not think everyone is screwed up knuckleheads. We live in the United States of America and have the freedom to our opinions. What makes my posts worse? But not the worst? Explain to me because I want to know. If I am wrong or did not understand something that I read by all means correct me. You are talking to the daughter of a former Marine and a retired Kentucky State Police Capt. who served under Martha Layne when she was Governor as her Criminal Justice Cabinet member. Dad did traffic fatality accident investigations. My brother practices law in Cynthiana, Kentucky. I also read Norm Fernandez Esquire on Billy Lane. Let me know how my thinking is wrong. I would really like to know. Just do not do the LARIDER name calling.
Sandie, if this is directed at me I not saying your thinking is wrong. I just think law enforcement went to great lengths to explain why they proceeded as they did. Sounds like you come from a great family. At best these posts seem to air peoples frustration with our judicial system, and various crimes. I won’t say what the down side of these posts are, because I think that’s fairly plain to see. I will say a psychoanalyst would have a field day. As a friend of Billy’s, I say he has a debt that no matter what, he can not repay it or make it right. I have read this blog and contemplated a long time before I put in my 2 cents. I really hope that if one of your friends puts themselves in a situation like this that you do not cut and run from them. I am sure that this is tearing his heart out, but what is done is done. Now Billy will have to make whatever ammends the court decides(hopefully more). But it will never be right no matter what happens. For those of you that don’t know him, I am sure you know someone similar, try to help your friend before it s too late. I am not a kiss ass but I know that he has a good soul. I also know that he is in the wrong but he is in the self preservation mode now, as would any sane individual. So my opinion is most of you are correct but do not judge or condemn as we never know when that ball will be in our court.

I was reading on Mike Odom’s Blog that the civil trial and the criminal trial are set to start only days apart, Feb.7th and Feb. 9th. Looks like Billy will have his day in court. One can only imagine how long the criminal trial will last. Yes, everyone would be in a self preservation mode….but would we be out having a good old time and acting as if we had done nothing wrong?

It has changed my habits too. It is amazing how our actions have consequenses. I do feel bad for everyone. I bought a CHOP FICTION book for a nephew for a Christmas gift and left it with Gina for Billy to sign and personalize. Billy signed the book to my nephew and I was called after it was signed to pickup. I do not wish anyone bad luck. I think we can all learn from this situation and maybe think before we act. Nobody has the right to judge another human. I would do anything it took to keep myself out of jail. I do believe that I would lay low. I am glad that I am not a famous person. None of these blogs would be on the internet if would have been sitting in Billy’s seat. One has to feel a bit of sympathy. I was at San Remo restaurant in Melbourne, Florida. Walking distance from Choppers,Inc. Billy came in with his parents and I felt sympathy because I heard comments from the wait staff. I was thinking that he had to eat too!!! Yes…we must stick by our family and friends.

I was just closing up the shop and decided it was too cold to lay some paint on some bike parts. I came in the office and just read your last post. Here on the west coast it hasn’t been in the news, so it hasn’t been a topic of conversation. But it must be a terrible feeling to have done this and be so well known. But then again if I was in his shoes no one would know meanyways. I know I would lay low very low. But I would be leaning on friends for support. It sounds as if a bunch of his friends have cut & run though (at least from what I’m reading).

I think everyone feels badly for the Morelock family. We live in the USA not Communist Cuba and are allowed to spend our money as we wish. I think Billy made a big mistake. Hey, just about everything that can be said about this tragic incident has been said. I talked to Billy in Daytona, and he seems to be regretful and humbled by all of this. That excuses NOTHING but I think the man appreciates the gravity of the consequences for his actions. My thoughts and prayers are with the Morelock family; however I have been guilty of DWI myself years ago. I gave that up long ago, but I always thank God that no one got hurt. I have lost friends and loved ones to drunk drivers, most thru no fault of their own. I’ll bet I’m not the only one to have lived this. Nobody’s kissing Billy Lane’s ass. He has a date with the law and I think he knows it.

To anyone who wants to take out of town visitors to CHOPPERS,INC. in Melbourne. They have closed the retail store and shop to visitors. If you want to spend money on a BILLY shirt you must buy it online. BILLY laid off his store help. WHAT A GUY!!!!!
respect to all…no matter what we say and think justice (especially in this case) will show that it is always within our society…. isn’t it odd that bikers (especially pre-1985 drank and partied without any of this?)…
I hope both families find closure to this nightmare. One man has passed and the other will be destroyed. Instead of bitchin and fighting we all need to realize how fragile life is and be aware of choices and consequences. This is a lesson to all of us. “It will never happen to me” can not be an option in our minds. I don’t care if billy is an outlaw or poser or thief or great guy, there is no way he thought this would ever happen. He is living a nightmare everyday because he was consumed with fame and fortune. Can you imagine having complete financial freedom, a fan club everywhere you go and doing what you love everyday.Go ahead and say “yeah” but then come back to reality. What if that fantasy came true? how would you handle it? The discovery channel took an average joe who had the perfect look and made him larger than life. Billy was unable to adjust to the exposer he received and in turn completely lost control of his life.. Now the dream is a nightmare and he is much worse off than if he had never been discovered in the first place. There is no doubt billy was wild before he was discovered but the billy after T.V. was for sure a train wreck waiting to happen. Where were his friends and family? why didn’t someone step in? Everybody is here now when it’s too late!!!!

I am sure Gerald Morelock will rest in piece when justice is served. All I know is that I am glad that I do not have to walk in Lane’s shoes. It appears that Lane is putting his affairs in order in case he goes to prison for awhile. Lane likes to be a BAD BIKER and probably will have prison time to add to his resume. I do not feel that he will get off the charges in Florida. North Carolina had no case because Lane refused to blow or give blood for the BAC test when the trooper pulled him over in North Carolina. Then Lane managed to produce 4 witnesses who lied about what he drank at the Smokeout. We all can get by with something…..but it always catches up to us. Yes, RIP Gearald Morelock. We know that the past holidays were empty because a loved one was taken from you early and by the hand of a unlicensed and drunk driver who had absolutely no regard for the law.

Cyril, I am subscribed to get a notice of your new parts. I really like the mini hansle bars….I did not think that they would look good on a Fatboy. Some really nice work. I understand it is hard for you to make any kind of a comment on Billy Lane, since he is a frind. Looks like he got rid of his help at Choppers Inc. who had become frinds and turned his retail business over to a company to sell it online.YOU should REALLY br glad you were not on his payroll. Looks like anyone who has crossed is path is either a unpaid business,in jail or dead. Got to give you credit standing by Lane. I wonder if you would feel the same if he had killed your brother under the circumstances Mr. Morelock was killed because Lane had no regard for the law?? Can you believe I was on a web site and Lane has actually approached people about what if Erin was driving??? I was in shock. Poor girl would go to jail and her life ruined. Beach it seems like Billy has been on a fast track to disaster since his early Miami Days. The law and Billy have such a close relationship that they probably exchange Christmas cards yearly. Everybody has parents who have told them that their actions have consequences. Billy did not play by the rules. He is no different than you or I and he deserves jail time. Futhermore…I think his bond was insulting. Everybody knows it was too low. Nice? Is taking somebodies 22 year old daughter a ride on his chopper that “DRUNK” responsible? Then getting in loaner Dodge truck and driving with no regard for traffic laws and killing somebody with no remorse…..is that “OKAY”. Quite frankly, I do not see any bashing here in this site. I think people are outraged as well as they should be. Mike Odom does a lot of research and only prints the facts. I guess some people find the facts not to their liking….but they are facts. I beg to differ with you. You do make money if people are paying $12.00 to read your posts. How would you and Cyril feel if Billy had killed your brother or loved one instead of Morelock? It very well could have been any of us killed. Would it be okay then??? None of this would have happened if Billy was not driving and Billy knew he had no drivers license because the North Carolina trooper took them the night he pulled Billy over there.

Maybe not, but I bet people are lined up to get a seat. Maybe they will even have a big screen in the parking lot like they did at the OJ trial. It is open to the public.I think many will show up.

There is ABSOLUTELY no discussion about motorcycles…it is all about Billy Lane and his legal problems. Just like the name of the blog suggests. Hey Mike Odom, I think you have done a wonderful job reporting on Billy and his latest legal troubles….my hat is off to you and I did not have to pay $12.00 to read your posts. You are the “BEST”!!!!
Maybe you ought to ask Mike what it cost him to go to Viera and get over 400 pages of the accident report. Mike still does not charge and any money he gets goes to LUPUS RESEARCH….not his pocket. He has made many calls too. We are curious as to which Bike Builders gave you exclusive interviews…. if any.

Sandie. You are incorrect about your statement. The title of my Blog is “Cyril Huze Blog”. Subtitle “All Things Custom Motorcycles”. Only 1 of my posts was about Billy Lane and I said in it that I will no more comment. And I will not. Period. All my other posts (319 at this day) are related to motorcycles. I will never write any Blog about the tragedy of anyone. I will not try to attract people to my Blog doing this. It’s immoral. And I have strong values. I respect Mike searching and giving factual information. He is a very good source for those who want to know the truth. But again my Blog is and will remain about my love & my life: custom motorcycles. And it will remain free of charge.

Pretty sorry how he did his loyal staff at Choppers Inc. Billy’s not very loyal to his friends. Man, the resale prices have dropped big time on his bike. Seems like if he goes to prison as he well should, the chopper building will come to a halt. He ruined his life and killed a innocent man.

Also, do you believe every rumor you hear? I don’t think Billy would ask his passenger to say she was driving that night – since they only met that night and unless she is terminally ill or severely stupid there would be no reason for her to take the blame for him.
In reading some of your posts, in one you seem hard against Billy and the next you are buying Choppers Inc merchandise and visiting the shop.
Yes, I did go to Lane’s retail store and took a guest from Indianapolis ther who wanted to go…but it was closed and everyone but Warren and his office manager laid off. You have to buy Lane’s merchandise from a online store. Billy is putting assets in other peoples names and trusts and getting his financial house in order. I am sure his high paid lawyers have gave him the best scenario and the worse scenario. I say Billy is looking at time away from home. If he is building anyuthing it will not be choppers. Most likely baking bread or making license plates. I have only spent money on his book “CHOP FICTION” for myself. I should have waited because instead of paying $25.00 for the book they will be on a clearance table at Barnes and Noble for $2.98. I am not AGAINST Billy but he did wrong and needs to pay for his crime and the needless death of a human being. I want him to have a fair trial but much evidence is stacked against him. Bottom line, when a trooper in North Carolina takes your drivers license…you know immediately they are suspended. If you look at the inside covers of CHOP FICTION you will see that Mr. Lane has quite a collection of tickets. Worse yet, Billy drove down AIA many times to go to his heavily mortgaged home and knew that he was passing in a no passing zone. Those double yellow lines have been on the highway at the accident scene for 11 years that I know. Do you not think he needs to be punished? Do you think it is alright to drive so drunk? How big of a hurry could he have been to get home to be so careless?? Fair trial yes. No lynching. But maximum sentence needs to handed down. Did you by any chance catch how fast he changed his website? Billy had Thanksgiving with his family and Christmas too. The Morelock’s were missing a son, brother and father that is gone forever. I do not think that is right. We should all pay for our poor decisions. Nobody is above the law. Yes, I know who Cyril is. His shop is about 100 miles from my house. He happened to be the most talanted builder around. Has a good personality and very popular. You will not see him acting like he is above the law. He is a great mind with a lot of vision. Makes and designs great parts and accessories. Check out Mike Odom’s blog on Cyril. Mike went to visit Cyril in the middle of Cyril moving to a new shop. All is welcome at Cyril’s shop….just call first.
I feel that this is another incident that shows how the culture of America is changing to what it must have been like in the 1920’s and ’30’s where the rich could do no wrong; get away with breaking the law, buy off politicians, and generally take advantage of the poor. As society stratifies the classes, that is, the disparity between rich and poor, the masses seem to ideolize the rich, fawn over their lifestyle and forgive any transgression.
Sycophantic TV shows like E! reinforce this social caste structure by showing hollywood names oversteping moral, ethical and legal bounderies, but because of their earning power they are forgiven no matter what havoc they reek. Modern day robber barons like ConAgra, MicroSoft, Enron and Haliberton corrupt the environment, deprive the impoverished, monopolize and usurp, all with impunity. This has the effect of turning American democracy into an Orwellian plutocracy.
Celebrities and mega-corporations will never be treated with the same criterion as the masses. Mr. Lane will undoubtly shelter his assets and will therefore escape financial ruin. His lawyers will make a substantial sum, and his business will be back, albeit under a new name.
It is up to his supporters to decide his penality.
Will you buy his merchandise and support his lifestyle, or will you show your disdain for his actions? Afluence separates Mr. Lane from responsibility, by taking that safety net from him we can send a message to him and others like him.
An aside:
Isn’t it funny how webmasters who charge for their sites NEVER make money or, at best, break even? They all run at a deficit, pouring money down an endless internet “tube” and they say they do it all for YOU! I wish I had that kind of disposible income, or that noble of character.
As someone who grew up in South Florida, I can see what happened to Billy. My Friends and I used to race our sports cars up the A1A road back in the 80’s and it was a lot of fun. It is a cool beach road that curveds over into some tree lined lanes with no runoff area). You just had to make sure you did not screw up or someone could die. It was dangerous but danger was accepted as part of the game. It sounds sick but this story is true and none of my good friends ever crashed and burned (we were probably lucky). We would have timers running in the cars to figure out the speeed and average speed was over 100 mph. We were rarely caught by the police, there where not that many who patrolled that area back then (that is one thing that has changed, cops are everywhere on A1A now). People we did not know did die on the road on occasion, usually new drivers who put it in the trees. There were also many movies around back then which glorified street racing (Cannonball Run, Smokey and the Bandit etc.) A lot of the movies glorified racing up Mulholland Drive in California but it was the same thing as racing up A1A. To make a long story short, Billy was overtaken by the intoxication of fame. I had a small whiff of the fame thing when I was younger and Women sense it and flock to it. I think Fame is the most powerful drug of all, it is a primal thing for women. Erin looks like a hot Chick from the photo’s I have seen, I am sure Billy was ready to explore that territory in a hurry. If you do drink and drive (not recommending it) you need to have extreme dicipline when you take the vehicle out, Thousands of Americans drive drunk everyday and dont have accidents. Billy got caught in a situation which I am sure he did not expect, it was a combination of overconfidence and the belief he was destined for greatness and life was good. He made a mistake when he pulled out to pass and did not check the lane to make sure it was clear. This happens everyday in the US, if he was not drinking he would face no jail time and a fine of less than $500. It is a tragedy for all involved. I still drive fast and have a very quick sportscar, When I drive I pay full attention to what is going on around me. I will miss Billy’s show’s in the future, they where always interesting. Hope he faces what he needs to per the law, but his life should not be ended over this.
Sandie, whats going on with the change in attitude regarding this issue. Did you and La rider get together and have a discussion regarding this issue. I am not being critical regarding your comments, but you tend to jump from one side of the line to the other. Readers do not really know where you are coming from. That is the observation that I have made as well as others. Can’t we put this topic to bed already and let the juducial system handle it from here

If we all thought the same way it would be hell finding your bike at Daytona Bike week……they would all be the same. Lane sure isn’t a “mega-corporation”. HD isn’t even a megacorp. As for his relative celebrity, you need to dig deep into the cable listings to find Discovery Build Off so let’s not go over the top here. That goofy loser William Hung with the tone deaf singing has much more name recognition than Lane. A regular gig on cable doesn’t get you a herd of paparazzi hanging around the door.
Not to excuse any of the moral or legal trespasses of the named robber barons because they all sport a deep bench in the chicanery and deceipt game, but they also are in the business of feeding the world, revolutionizing the transfer of information, providing the energy that fuels our lives and building the edifices of 21st century man. The fact is that empires are typically just and unjust, businesses provide both corruption and value, and men are both good and evil. It’s strictly a matter of the percentage of either and the serendipity of fate. You fault the rich and powerful because throughout history they have been able to get a fatter thumb on the scales of justice than those of us with lesser resources. Fair enough. It’s just that Billy Lane isn’t their front nor is of any value as an object lesson to be sacrificed so that some of us can feel some kind of righteous vindication for the perceived wrongs visited on us by “robber barons”.

He’s a guy who likely was living large and regardless of how nice a cat he is to orphans and little old ladies, he got behind the wheel over the BAL and killed a guy. Drunk. leadfooted and on the wrong side of the road is no way to go through life.Still, Lane doesn’t rise to the level of (with a tip of the hat to Cyril’s heritage) Marie Antoinette. I doubt that he laughs at the misery of the peasant masses and when his head rolls it ain’t gonna foster in any revolution between the citizen and the aristocracy.
Finally as a matter of perspective, the majority of Homo Sapiens on this little blue ball would group those of us posting on this board and out putting around town on our scoots with an ATM card in our wallet and a gallon of milk and a pound of balogna in the Frigidaire as robber barons and oligarchs and “the rich”, so before we indict those that are not or even those that actually are, Pop suggests a bit of self-preservation included in the argument. If you ever did succeed in inciting the masses to Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite on a global scale we will all have an appointment with Madame Guillotine.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion and basically, I think we have the same opinion, that what Billy did was wrong and he should be punished. Surely, anyone who can afford several $50-$125k custom mortorcycles has money to shelter, and in my opinion and caste, is ostensibly “rich”. Although he is a builder, not the consumer, the parts, paint and tyres need to be paid for up front.
One needen’t be of the aristocracy to be a popular personality in a niche demographic. If TV is your only criteria for celebrity, then try a visit to a newsstand and look at the motorcycle magazines. Previous to this incident, Mr. Lane was featured in several magazines and numerous times.
My similitude to Mega-corporations and celebrities was to stress the growing facination with “the rich and famous”. I’m sorry you read so much into it.
Yes W.G. ALBRIGHT and Billy does not pay for parts. Lane was just sued this past year for collection of parts he received and did not pay for…..so hence he got served a summons. A debt of $50,000, Lane said he got wrong parts….well he should have returned them instead of keeping them and not paying. I totally agree that Lane is not Trump rich but he certainly has assets to shelter. Zee you seem to know Billy personally or someone who does… you seem to know insider information. YOU are “Such” a know it all about everything. Check out Lane’s sordid, dishonest past in Miami. I miss you LARIDER!!!!! Jamie we are not the only ones who think Beach is a awful blog. I went to Ebay and checked out what you said about Billy selling everything under the sun. I do believe copymeplease is Billy Lane and it looks like he is having a heck of a garage sale. I read the feedback from buyers and looked at what they bought. I am sure Lane has no sponsors and doubt that anyone is buying his Choppers,Inc. merchandise. I do not mean to be hard on him. I have the motto “DO THE CRIME PAY THE TIME”. I am really sorry that this has happened to Lane…..but his actions caused the death of somebody. Jails are full of DUI crimes and every day someone is killed by a drunk driver. Jails are full of people who continue to drive with suspended license.
I work in a dealership and it’s my day off. So, I spent some time to read the comments. Who are these Beach and Train who run commercials on this blog to say that they are the greatest? I went there. Trash, misinformation and auto congratulation is only what you will find on these people site. Examples among many: in their forum Beach & Train are the ones who had a few scoops for you: EddieTrotta tomorrow morning on tv show Good Morning America (false). Billy Lane this evening on a radio talk show (false), and so on. I suspect they write most of the comments under other names. Their posts are copied from other sites. Pictures are crappy. And they want you to read exclusive interviews about builders…if you give them 12 dollars. Exclusive??? The well known builders are interviewed all the time. They answer questions from anyone. Easy to meet them in shows, read what they think in magazines, or go to their websites. No, no. It’s not about builders. They don’t tell you the truth. It’s about Billy Lane. What other builders are thinking of him. Save 12 dollars. The answer is: He is a nice guy who made mistakes. That’s it folk. Great news. Thank you very much. No need to pay. More, Beach and Train write their own PR and ask you to go to myspace.com. There you will find nothing interesting (of course) except that the guy (Beach) is 90 years old. Nothing against old people, but understand now that the guy may be not in the best shape to write about motorcycles. What does he know? His name is Peter Furman. Why is he hiding his identity on his site? Now, about the other comments, I agree with Cyril Huze. It is sad. There is nothing else to say. Billy will defend himself as best as he can, raise money to pay his defense and we all would do the same. Keep this blog clean of trash because it’s a very good one written by a professional who knows what he is talking about. The industry don’t need the others. They are just there to try to make a few bucks from you and they will never belong to our family.

Warning everybody, these people are committing internet fraud. I was so suspicious about many things about them that I made some research. I make a living with motorcycles but I also know a little bit how to use a computer. Go to Alexa.com. (it’s a site tracking some statistics about websites). Enter the internet address of the thebeachcruiser.com. At the bottom of the page,you will see "reviews". There is only one written July 12, 06. A 5 Stars review, the best. And you know why? Because this review was written by Beach about himself and his own site!!!!!!. You find in the reviews the same sentences, expressions, wording that he uses in his site to auto congratulating himself. It’s hilarious. There is more. He signs the review "Peter" located in Georgia", like Peter Furman living in Georgia, the real name of Beach (because he thinks that nobody is going to find his name). He uses an email he used to buy a book from Amazon "Archie The Motorcycle Guy". The guy is dumb. He is the same person talking all the time about truth, stating only the facts, a guy with superb family values. Shame on you Beach. Go away from our world.
You know, I have recently discovered this site and gotten interested in it. Cyril Huze is a known quantity and his stuff is quite a bit more unique than much of the other offerings in the marketplace. Flair, I guess, is a fair adjective.
This board is easy to navigate and easy on the eye and that’s a real plus.
The tech and the gadget pix are offered up in just about the right dose to make for a quick read. The Billy Lane tragedy, the HD numbers reports, the peripheral items that make it into the Huze sphere all are good bits to chew on.
But most or all of this stuff is available elsewhere. It happens to be packaged in a good format here which got my attention and Cyril and/or his webmaster let threads like this run their course.

I agree with you POP. Some info are received by many in the industry. But Cyril publishes very fast and gives his own opinion which is what a blog is all about. The guy doesn’t kiss ass. He doesn’t need to. In addition he talks about tech on some of his own bikes. And people are free to talk & comment. About Beach/Train and their fraudulent statements, I found another one. They pretend in a post that their site gets 60,000 different visitors every month. So, he has more traffic than Harley Davidson worldwide! LOL They are nuts!

I thought biker build off evolved from billy lane’s experience on monster garage. This would explain why he was in the first episodes. Billy lane’s persona and attitude(like it or loathe it) created huge exposure and brought an awareness of bike building to millions who had money but knew nothing about motorcycles. It was good t.v. The fact that billy’s bikes had problems made him a real person like you or me. Did he build that last gas tank? He never built a Caterpilar, snap-on, dixie lawn mower, shelby, or other themed kit bike. (congrats OCC on finally making your own frame after being on t.v. for 3 years.) I feel this run of overnite celebrities will come to an end shortly and you’ll see a shit load of customs on e-bay. This sucks for the undiscovered bike builders who had real talent and wern’t asking $80,0000 for a “chopper.” This last season of biker build off was horrible. Discovery has ridden the wave long enough and TLC has agreed to put it to death. If I’ve offended anyone that’s too bad, I have to go now. I’m getting ready to weld some missle flaps on my road king, also considering some custom fab mickey mouse ears for the tank. I’m going for a radical disney theme.

I have a 2003 road king anniversary bike and a 2001 lowrider. I go solo on the lowrider and take my hottie on the king. I ended up with just under 9K this last season. Didn’t get to take any long trips this year.
I’m currently looking for a shrine edition bike. sounds like heritage,fatboy,or ultra are the only models offered. I wish they offered the Rking. I’d also like to try building a bike in the future. Possibly a WCC CFL 4 up as the foundation.
“CHOPPERCHICK”: I have not attended any event Billy Lane has been at. I have been to his store in Melbourne twice. First time, he was in North Carolina answering the first DUI charge. I bought “CHOP FICTION” for my nephew. I paid for the book, left the book to be personalized and autographed for my nephew. A store employee called about a week or so later then my husband went to pick it up. Second time, the store was closed to the public. I went there because I have company from Indianapolis, she wanted to see Choppers, Inc. and of course buy a tank top. Maybe, if a drunk without valid drivers license goes speeding to overtake three cars, crosses a double yellow line {no passing zone}then kill somebody you love, maybe they will get probation. I do not hate Billy Lane. I just think he should not have been driving after such a busy day drinking. Budweiser will pay cab fare for anyone to get home and on holidays they will not only pay your cab fare but pay for towing of your car, bike or truck. Do not forget it was nearly 45 minutes after Lane killed Mr. Morelock that they finally drew his blood. As stated in the police report Billy refused yet again, to have blood drawn. If, you think what Lane did is okay, it is your right to think he should have probation. I wonder if you would feel differently if it was your Dad, brother, husband, son, daughter or loved one killed? I feel like Mr. Morelock had the right NOT TO BE KILLED BY A DRUNK DRIVER. I think Lane was well aware that he had no drivers license.Lane also knew he was drunk or why would he refuse the blood test? Two refusals to comply with the implied consent law that you acknowledge when you sign your drivers license cause you to lose your license for life. Lane handed the NC trooper his Florida license. When Lane was released from jail in North Carolina, they kept the license. I believe this is standard procedure. Not sure on that one. Lane’s Florida drivers were in possession of the Rowan County, North Carolina Clerk of Courts office after the arresting trooper took them when Lane was pulled over riding down the wrong side of the highway, speeding and without a helmet in a state that requires a helmet. I would think Lane KNEW that he had suspended drivers license and should not have been driving anything. If Lane was not driving drunk without valid license before he went to answer the charges in North Carolina Mr. Morelock would not be dead. I have a beloved Uncle that was killed by a drunk. I have a very dear friend whose daughter was killed by a drunk at the age of fourteen standing at a school bus stop. I feel for those young children who were in the lead car that Lane was passing in a no passing zone who saw that horrific wreck….motorcycle vs. big big truck and a human lying dead in pieces on the highway. That is something that those children will never forget. People should not drive drunk, with or without valid drivers license. You can think as you wish. I regret calling you a dog. You are probably ugly inside and out.
“Iowalowrider” I have a Fatboy 2002. Black and chromed out. Nice kickstand with a middle finger. I was at Mid Florida Cycles in Palm Bay, Florida and one of their mechanics had ordered that kickstand for his bike and I had to be a copycat and get one for myself. You have a garage full of nice rides. I did not get to go on any long rides this year either. Did do a three day week-end trip. Left Sebastian went up scenic A1A to Cape Canaveral, back to U.S. HWY 1 North to Edgewater and stopped at NO NAME for lunch and a Pepsi. Stopped in Daytona and spent the night. Then went to Main Street….so nice NOBODY was there and rode back south to Symnra and hit the Harley Store there and took HWY 40 to Florida Silver Springs and headed to Leesburg Harley and on to Clermont Harley. Nice ride thru the middle of the state. There was actually a few places that resembled hills. Beautiful weather. Left Clermont and headed back south to HWY 60 and into Vero Beach. Home is about 13 miles North of Vero Beach. I would highly recommend stopping at the Clermont Harley Davidson dealership. It was a great store. Going down the middle of Florida was like a ride in the Country.

comparing almost any of the mentioned builders as role models is unfortunately a mistake. if you are a responsible person then this statement would not apply to you — would it? its true that the very thing that they are admired for leads to there eventual detriment. i have ended up under two different cars before and broken both legs. i have been down a half dozen times. and every time it was from doing something irresponsible. i am older now (no longer bullit proof) and no longer have the luxury of drinking and or riding like a fool (as if i ever did to begin with.) alcoholizm rears its ugly head in the obituary as , bridge abuttment, telephone pole, guard rail, brick wall, failed liver and many other ways to save embarrassment. and what is responsible? when there are young eyes around, why cant we drink something that doesnt modify our brain waves? i have talked to riders that think what indian larry did was somehow sacred. i bet larry would tell you it was irresponsible after the fact. and now, billy has done something that he cant undo as well. while were on the subject of role models, starved for affection, jesse james wife took there child and left him. paul senior does rather well for himself by cursing and threatening his family. role model? im afraid so

I’m having a hard time understanding why someone would buy billy lane merchandise and take their out of town friends to his shop and then come to this site and want him destroyed for life. NOODLES: What do you think of House of Kolors vs. PPG candy apple red paint? Which would fade the most? I have been looking online and asking everybody who paints cars and bikes. Seems like the majority tells me House of Kolors has the better looking color in the end…..but nobody says which fades the least. Remember this is a mostly sunny, hot and salt in the air state.

I use both, House of Kolors is what I use for candys and heavy flake colors. I use PPG for solid or light flake colors, so basicly I mix and match. I like PPG’s DCD35 clear and it goes over everything I do. Both brands hold up excellent, I haven’t had any problems with either of them. Niether of them like this cold weather so it’s slow going.

Nice post Cyril. Thanks for letting everybody have an opinion and for allowing them to express it here. After reading your last post I was curious about what was going on at the beach cruiser. They are visiting your blog more than their own. lol The “who cares” stats are posted and defended but much to my surprise a violent attack is made towards “Slim.” Of course Slim is refered to as “slime” and will not be allowed to respond. Peter is pissed off that slim has exposed him. I hope the BeachCruiser checks himself into a clinic for a mental evaluation very soon. Slim posted on this site and the beach responded on his site. How low is that.
I see there’s a slide show of good looking but none the less average gals to provoke interest in joining the site for $12.00 In my opinion the Beach seems to be a drama queen and craves conflict constantly. He needs to find a way to deal with his big ego and accept the fact that people don’t have to see things his way.
I wrote politely to Beach & Train telling them that they create their own problems. They should apologize to all my readers. But they even refuse to post my answer. If they have no respect from so many it’s their own fault.
Cyril: Most people are not honorable, respected and honest like you. You sir, command respect. You have proven that you are a loyal friend to your close friends. You can be depended on when needed. I commend you. But, I do not agree with people “HAMMER” just making untrue statemenents. Ron would lose his job if he made such comments to “HAMMER”. Budweiser is most certainly the “KING” of beer and they command high standards for their employees. You as a employee for Carrol Distributors represent Carrol. Employees in Ron’s position would not tell Hammer and did not tell Hammer “ANYTHING”. Ron only explained the TOW & GO programs on holidays. I want him to answer in court the same as you and I would. Thanks Noodles! I never thought I’d see the day I would be telling somebody I hope you get “SNOW”……but I hope you do see snow. It is awful seeing the fires out west in the summer. Nothing much worse than losing your home. I have relatives in upstate New York, Saratoga Springs and they have had absolutely no snow accumunlation this year and not much to speak of last year. They spend more money on snowmobiles than we do on our bikes!! Last year less than 5 miles were put on their snowmobiles and this year they have not been out of the garages. The weather has been “ODD” the past two years.

All is well in Central Florida. We just has a lot of rain and wind. I am like 45 miles south of Kennedy Space Center, in the middle of Cocoa Beach and Vero Beach. Weather is strange for this time of year. There are plenty of people who need your thoughts and prayers and they have mine as well.

You have begun to bore me so this will probably be my last post on this thread. I only started responding to you after your arrogant posts to Chopperchick, which she did not deserve.
I guess the sarcasm of my last post was not evident to you, try looking up the word in the dictionary.
Anheiser Busch conducts their tow and go at certain times, usually during the holidays. It is a laudable goal, but lets face it, they do it for the good publicity and to help alleviate liability for those who over consume their product. I would love to see the statistics of how many cars they pay to have towed every year. AB would need their own national towing fleet if they towed everyone’s cars home after they overconsumed.
Your threat about AB monitoring blogs on websites such as Cyril’s is a joke. They may (but doubtful) monitor it to see if they have any marketing ideas they can glean from it . The idea they would spend significant resources to try to hunt down a blogger for being critical of their tow and go program is a joke. As Chopperchick implied you really do need prozac and therapy. Get off the fatboy you are sitting on while you read this and get some help.
Finally, in regards to my manhood, I am quite well endowed. There is a saying “Even the largest ships look small in the Panama Canal”. One of the Clydesdale horses sent to your home e-mailed me in horsesese and said you complained he was too small also. Maybe we can bring a Mack Truck over, that might be big enough for you.

I’ve been riding since 1994 and have went to many bike events. The one thing I have always liked is the feeling of brotherhood/sisterhood. Bikers are some of the most generous and friendly people in the world. Billy has done so much good with the charity work he does. He made a huge mistake but he has the ability to make a big difference in peoples lives. Anyone that has watched the Blood, Sweat and Gears DVD should agree.

Absolutely….never turn your back on your own. We must remember that Morelock was one of our own. Gerry was on a two wheeler at the time of his death and was operating the two wheeler as he should have been. FHP accident investigators stated he was on the right side of his lane riding five feet from the white line. He was as far away from the double yellow, no passing lines painted on the middle of the highway as he should have been.
I understand that. My loyalty is with the person I know (or a fan of)which is Billy Lane. I have nothing bad to say about Gerald Morelock.
I don’t claim to be friends with BL. I have met and talked to him several times and exchanged a few e-mails. He has always been nice to me.
I never met or talked to Mr. Morelock.
I am very loyal to my family and friends no matter what they do. I am going to be loyal to BL because I have been a fan of his work for several years.

This is a very sad situation for everyone involved.

NOODLES: How dare your “SMARTS” be tested. Glad it is warming up enough to throw paint on. Today the Judge set the date for the Civil Trial in Morelock vs. Billy Lane and DC Corp. for August 20th. Lane’s and DC attorney’s tried to say they could not be ready. 4 & 1/2 months is not enough time for them? They will have had nearly a year to prepare. Judge said “too bad” he would be giving jury instructions first day and for them to be ready…… Well, we will have to talk about paint until then or see if the criminal trial goes first. Sad news is that the two children in the lead car Lane was passing when he killed Morelock are on the witness list for both trials. POOR KIDS!!!

Gerald morelock, no more birthdays. The little kids go to trial and testify. Life’s a bitch. Hindsight is 20/20 Sandy. More bad than good in this world. Gerald obeyed all the rules except for drinking. What if he had quit two beers sooner. Would this put him out of lane’s path? Who knows. Lets use the original timeline and say, Morelock takes the ditch and flys off the bike. We have plenty of witnesses like two little kids. what happens to Morelock? I mean he just got ran off the road and has been injured, He’s a victim right! Well I’d bet anything the officer’s first question is “Are you alright sir”, followed by “Have You Had Anything To Drink This Evening.” If Gerald had lived a DUI would have been issued and in all honesty a very tough road lies ahead for going after Billy. This would be another example of the system “failing us.”
This case looks like a slam dunk. There’s more than enough evidence, but don’t forget N. Carolina dropped the ball. A prior DUI conviction on the record would be huge. The jury will find out morelock was over the legal limit and it will have an impact. I bet most of the potential jury pool has read about it in florida newspapers.
North Carolina had no evidence except for the trooper. Lane refused the implied consent sobriety tests. The only witnesses were for Lane’s defense and they “KNEW” how much he had drank the day he was pulled over in North Carolina. There was no jury, it was heard by a judge. This judge felt there was not enough evidence to convict. Hense, Billy Lane’s drivers license were suspended from the time he handed them to the trooper. If you refuse sobriety tests twice, you lose your license for life. You guys should read the article in Florida Today newspaper. Check out that blog. Talk about a public lynching. Post there! You will get beat up there more than you beat up on me. You’re correct, Lane does have a tough way to go. Our actions have consequenses!!! Unfortunately, it does not matter if Morelock was drinking. The person who caused the accident by driving without license, speeding, passing on a double yellow line,hitting and killing someone in the opposite lane got the ticket. Snoopy:Yes, I live in Florida. No, I do not live in Brevard County. I live in Indian River County. That is the next county south of Brevard. The court cases are on Brevard County Clerk of Court Records website.The arrest papers and FHP’s accident report are public record. I know a reporter who has gone to court for “every” hearing. They have been to court more than Lane. Lane was not there yesterday just his lawyers.
Two drunk Drivers were on the road. A horrible accident. Billy Lane killed the other drunk driver. By the way Sandy, I said if gerald had lived it would be a tough road FOR HIM suing Billy given the fact that he was also drunk at the time of the accident. Talk all you want about double yellow lines, suspended license, etc. My question is, Did Gerald have the right to be on his bike five feet from the white line going the speed limit after consuming alcohol and having a BAC over the limit? No one deserves to die in an accident. I know this first hand. My best friend was killed in a drunk driving wreck 9 years ago he was 21. My other buddy was driving and fell asleep. They were both intoxicated. My best friend was a big built guy who always liked to go have fun and talk everyone else into driving him to the bars. Peer pressure kept my buddy from getting a DUI but he paid the ultimate price in the end. The driver went to prison for over two years so I felt the death of two friends. While in jail the driver’s marriage fell apart and ended in divorce. His bitch didn’t comply with the for better or worse vows and cheated on him repeatedly. To make the best of his situation my friend taught other inmates to read and write it was the only way he could use his education from college. When released he was not allowed to teach in Iowa. The guy took his second chance at life and has made the most out of it. He is remarried with two children and has a good job.
Billy lane didn’t hit St. Peter or a sober soccer mom, he hit another drunk driver. Neither one of these guys should have been on the road!!! I hope the ” discovery channel celebrity” gets a chance to redeem himself it will make the world a better place.

Mike has done extensive research and attended the court hearings as well. I don’t think Cyril would object to be telling you about Mike’s blog on Billy Lane. There is a great article on Mike’s site with Cyril. It is a good read. I am sure if you read the Florida Today, Brevard County Florida’s newspaper article regarding yesterdays court hearing setting the trial date and read the attached blog you will see Billy is no hero or idol. Remember, this is Lane’s hometown paper. People feel very strongly that he should go to jail. There are some pictures of Billy there for you to look at too.

Thank you. You would think the people in his home town would be a little more supportive of one of their own. I had never heard of Melbourne Fla. until I started seeing Billy’s bikes and found out where his shop was.
He has collected toys for the Marines toys for tots and he collected food for a local food bank at Thanksgiving, in his shop. It sounds like he tries to support his community. If I was him, when all is said and done, I’d move to another town.
Again, I am very sorry about the loss of Gerald Morelock.
Snoopy: Every fire department, several banks, three Harley Davidson dealerships, Publix [local grocery store], Winn Dixie [local grocery store] and many business owners, and I am sure that I have forgot somebody….like the Shriners who also collected for Toys for Tots. Many business owners collected for the Food Banks as well….the post office had a cart as you walked into the building to put food in. Yes, Lane did some good work. We all have done good work. We donate food and toys for the Bike Runs around the holidays. We have poker runs for fellow bikers whose families need aid. It is a shame that people feel so strongly against Lane now. I guess Lane’s actions are why they feel the way they do. After the North Carolina incident most of us would have taken a deep breathe and thanked God we got off a DUI and just lost our license for a year for refusing sobriety tests. I gather you found the court records and read the local newspaper with the locals comments. I found Cyril and Jesse James to build bikes more to my liking. I have family members, mostly young nephews who like Billy’s radical style. We can all think what we want. In the end it will be up to 12 jurors after the Judges instructions. I wish this had never happened. Both families, Lane’s and Morelock’s are suffering. For the record Melbourne is about twenty-five miles south of Kennedy Space Center. A super nice bike ride starts in Melbourne and you come down the mainland side on US HWY1 and ride about 20-25 miles to Wabasso[between Melbourne and Vero Beach) you cross a causeway that goes over the intracoastal, called Indian River and hit HWY A1A and go back North towards Kennedy Space Center. When you hit A1A going North you cross another causeway then you are riding by the ocean. Lane owns a townhouse there. You would know it was his because of the promotional DODGE RAMS and I mean “BIG DODGE RAMS” with customized paint jobs with Choppers, Inc., and the hugh Dodge Decals on the hood. One did not have to look for them….you could not miss them!! People were taking this ride for years before Lane moved here. Nobody was stalking him. If anyone wants to go spend their money on his merchandise, it is their right. Nobody stalks Lane. He is out in public all the time. You do not have to hunt for him. This is not a city like Miami or Orlando. Yes, maybe Lane will move…….but it will not be back to Miami. He was not liked much there.

I agree with you Sandie that DC should have checked Lane out before they gave him or loaned him the truck. That is the whole point about Negligent Entrustment.
With respect to the criminal part of the case, it will be up to a Jury to decide. In our country everyone is innocent until proven guilty. It is easy to convict someone based upon press statements, but it is a whole different matter to actually hear the evidence at trial.
I will say this, if what I have heard and read is true, than they should fry Lane; he killed an innocent driver while driving intoxicated and on a suspended license. The only way to know if what we have heard and read is true, is to wait for the trial!
On the civil end; these are the kind of cases that I do.
With respect to Lane doing biker events; I am surprised to say the least. But then again, he has not been convicted of anything yet. If he gets convicted I am sure it will be a whole different matter.

My attitude is simple; kill a biker; go to jail. It’s as simple as that.
According to what has been reported; Gerry Morelock was riding a street legal scooter, when due to no fault of his own, a truck crossed a double yellow line and slammed into him head on, killing him instantly.
It just happened to be Billy Lane that was the cager that killed Morelock who was on two wheels that day. We will know for sure after trial.
I don’t care if is Martha Stewart, George Bush, or the Pope, that was driving that day. When cagers display a wanton and reckless disregard for the rights of bikers to share the same road as them, fry their asses.
I am a biker lawyer. I handle motorcycle accident cases, do bikers rights cases, and write on motorcycle safety.
It is a fucken slaughterhouse out their right now. I get daily reports of motorcycle accidents that occur throughout the nation. We are being slaughtered. What is worse is that many of these cagers walk away with a slap on the wrist or less. It seems that our lives do not matter because we are bikers. There is a perception amongst cagers that we deserve what we get because motorcycles are not safe. There is blatant discrimination going on against bikers throughout the nation because of the form of transportation that we choose to ride. This is bullshit!
I myself was almost taken out by a negligent cager a few weeks ago. Luckily, I did not suffer the same fate as Morelock. I ended up with a torn hamstring muscle, foot injuries, and a pulled out lower back. It could have been worse.

I can understand that some on here are friends with Billy Lane, or are fans of Billy Lane. I don’t really know for sure what I would do if one of my friends were accused of what Lane has been accused of. I would probably defend them to the best of my ability in Court. I would probably give them some choice words too. I would never think of them the same.
In this case, I look at the death of Gerry Morelock the same way I look at any other biker or motorcycle rider being killed by a cager; with disgust. It does not matter who the cager is. What makes this case novel is that is is alleged to have been caused by another biker, who is also famous.
I will be riding this weekend here in Southern California. Many of you will also be riding wherever you are at as well. I wish you all a safe ride in the wind and I hope some fool does not cross the double yellow on you. Remember, any one of us could have been Gerry Morelock that day. May he rest in peace.

I guess I don’t understand what’s so “innocent” about driving your Yamaha while intoxicated. He didn’t deserve to die, but he also has no right to be on the road over the legal limit. Chrysler has huge pockets that’s why you go after them. More MONEY. How many dependants does Gerald have? Why didn’t his wife file a suit? Is he single? How much money will satisfy his loss? None!!!! All the references to O.J. and Robert Blake are retarded. “The Cager’s get a slap on the wrist,” but lets fry one of our own fellow bikers?
There are more accidents now because more people are riding bikes today. It’s the cool thing to do. Over half of these people need to get back to the golf course or office. It scares the shit out of me when I smell all the new leather and see the dealer t-shirts and new boots everywhere i go. A sober billy lane crossing the yellow line would have generated the same negative posts. Before the accident people bitched and moaned about his craftsmanship and were jealous of his fame. I think it’s cool that Norm is a biker adovcate and I’m sure he has a real passion for his work, but if a guy can afford to hire Kepler Funk that would be the way to go on both sides. I know Funk is no longer on board but the second, third, or fourth choices would still be better options. If Norm was a great lawyer then the Morelocks would have hired him for thier civil case.

Calender call, to set the trial date is before Judge Allawas at Viera Courthouse, Brevard County, Florida on March 23, 2007. By the way nobody has to “stalk” as you call it. All one must do is use their computer. Any information you desire is on the internet. I am with Norm, fry Lane’s butt. Dodge deserves to be sued for not keeping up with drivers license and driving records of people they loan promotional vehicles too!!!
I’m sure dodge’s lawyer’s will agree that you can’t operate your “moped” while intoxicated. I also add that dodge’s lawyer’s will probably be of a higher quality than Norm. I hate to disappoint you but they aren’t going to fry Billy Lane. Norm was hit by a cager recently so of course he is outraged. This is why he made the stupid comments.

Gerald Morelock had the right to live. He was in the proper lane. Nobody is avoiding the fact Morelock’s BAC was over the limit. Jo above on her Dec. 5 post was right. Norm was lucky wasn’t he compared to Mr. Morelock’s fate. Bad enough a careless driver was not paying attention. It could happen to any of us. When I was young I had a cool motorcycle, I rode it everywhere and was almost killed many many times.
I gave some thought to this issue, if Dodge did not give those promo trucks to Billy he would have probably stayed on the bike. Maybe they are now considered death dealers.
There is something about a motorcycle, when u ride it u tend to have an instinct to avoid large vehicles like our ancestors avoiding large predators

I spent the morning going thru Granny’s Bible reading DJCHOPPERS scriptures quoted above. Hate to say it……but one should practice what they preach. By the way I read the chapter you quoted not the scriptures. You are well read in the Bible. I have to say by your posts that you even knew how to quote the Bible and I am impressed by your knowledge of the Bible. You must have a little bit of faith. As I was reading…..it seems like maybe you googled or something to pick out scriptures that you wanted to use to benefit you and what you were writing to benefit you. Anyone who goes to church and is a believer reads the whole chapter and does not just pick out a verse to suit them. I am sure God is real proud of you. Hammer it is so cool. I am appalled at all the Billy-haters! True, you have the right to say what you feel..As do we. “We” being the ones who do love and support Billy. Yes, he used poor judgement. Yes, an innocent man was killed. YES, Billy will live with this every day of his life. As will the Morelock Family. My heart goes out to all involved. Just because I think Billy is an awesome person and one helluva bike builder does not mean I feel he should be accountable. As humans we all have accountability. As humans, too, we all show just how poorly we make decisions. Neither you, nor myself is exempt from that flaw in our humanity. I don’t see the need to kick anyone when they are down. Billy went out of his way once to help me with something. I have met him many times, and even had a pic go to print in a mag. He autographed a photo of himself and presented it to my sister, who had just lost her husband. He was the ultimate Billy fan. This has endeared Billy to me EVEN MORE than I previously was. To those of you who are determined to make everyone else see things as you do…don’t try! Billy is an awesome man. He does so much for others; continuously raising money to help childrens charities. He uses his ’star power’ to help others. I appreciate this! If you don’t, it’s your problem to deal with.

A court with a judge and 12 jurors will decide the fate of Lane in the criminal trial. Then he faces the civil trial which is set to go. Then there may be omething to debate. This is a dead subject till the trials start. Billy had the ability to hire several lawyers to defend him. We will just have to wait to see how it plays out. The discussion has been beat to death.

I was glad to see Cyril’s statement. My husband and I agree with him. Pointing fingers at anyone does not solve anything. We believe in not kicking a brother biker while he’s down.
I guess we should “ALL” and myself included wait to see what evidence is presented in both trials and wait for the verdicts. Iowalowrider, you really don’t have to understand. That is why both sides are represented by lawyers. I read some good information on a site called bikerlawblog. I don’t think anyone is saying it is okay for the victim, the fact the victim did not cause the wreck seems to be the issue. I am not a lawyer so I really do not know. There are many things about this case that is difficult to figure out.
I agree Bob. It’s a tragedy that one man lost his life and the other will most likely lose his assets and identity. The fact that the victim was drinking doesn’t get brought up much because he wasn’t at fault in the actual accident. This is fine for the criminal trial but as far as the civil trial goes I don’t think Dodge should be held responsible due to the fact that the victim was operating while intoxicated. Just a thought.
Seems like there is a lot of intimation here. Folks should show each other respect and not say offensive things to and about each other. Ultimately, Billy will lose all of his assets thru the civil court judgements to follow (no DC aid gonna happen in there), and once out of prison, he will wind up spending his days banging out metal at Jesse’s for cash under the table;
That’s as good as legal justice gets in this country- end of story.

There is a very sad future is in store for Billy Lane. Jon you are right the people who stand in line to have Lane autograph some merchandise they paid too much for are the people paying for his expensive lawyers. I also agree with you that Dodge will leave Lane out there to hang on his own. A ankle bracelet build off would be a good show on Discovery but Discovery has backed away from Lane. You do not see them showing his shows. Janklow is out of jail anyway. He sure got lucky on his sentence. I do not think justice was served to Janklow. Justice is not always fair.
True, Bob, justice does not always seem fair; But unless we go back to an “eye-for-an-eye” system, which our current justice system is NOT, there will always be a perception of unfair equity from some point of view.
Personally, I was very bummed about Janklow. I hung out in his circle a bit back in the 90’s, and I think people would be VERY surprised to learn that “Wild Bill” was not entirely unlike Billy Lane- Bill had Harleys before it was cool to be a riding Gov, water-skiied at 60 mph, and was a big influence in making Sturgis what it is;
But it’s also true that Janklow has had a dark and corrupt past, and only because of the perceived good he did for South Dakota thru the years, was he able to get off with a slap on the wrist…. No “luck” about that one.
On the surface, it doesn’t appear that justice was served in Janklow’s case. We taxpayers flipped the bill for the civil damages, as Bill was allegedly on “state” business when he ran over the biker- whatever.
The bottom line, tho, is that Janklow is now a leper in the political and legal communities- which DOES matter, because the ONLY thing Janklow ever really cared about was power and influence;
The fact that Janklow is now a walking poster child for disgraced politicians must weigh upon him 24/7- you just have to know how MASSIVE this man’s ego is, to realize that for him, this is the cruelest punishment of all- public scorn.
Seriously, Bill- eat a bullet- put yourself out of our pain.
I suspect the same thing will happen to Billy Lane- he’ll do token time in prison, lose everything in civil judgements… Losing his toys will hurt this man, yes;
But the biggest thing Billy ultimately loses will take place five years from now, when all the hugs from peers have stopped, all the attention goes away, and that freedom to do exactly what he wants, when he wants, has all dried up……. “LANE!!! FRIES!!!!” hehehehh……

I was a Black Sabbath fan, back in the olden days. The toys must not be much fun now….can’t drive.
I have spent the better of an hour and a half reading postings about Mr.Lane, in the beginning there were two sides: pro Billy and against Billy. I will admit I was as big of a fan as anyone till I had heard about the accident late last year. I am in a profession that unfortunately I respond to the aftermath of vehicle crashes and such. With that I will say that what most people post here is a lot of crap, unless you see it, you can have disconnect from it, I can’t.
What Mr. Lane did is inexcusable to say the least, but like it or not, every American citizen is allowed their day in court. I do, in my opinion, think that Mr. Lane should spend time in prison and be fined along with community service if he is ever on the street again.
All of the people who have written on this blog are entitled to their opinions, but it is not a place to have a pissing contest about who they believe is a role model or things of this sort.

T Dogg: Sounds like you are a paramedic or in law enforcement. Yes, I am sure none of us have any idea about the aftermath of a event like this accident. I agree. Lane’s behavior is inexcusable to say the least, especially since Lane knew he should not be driving with his license suspended. Prison time is deserving, a fine and community service. I commend every builder, Billy Lane included with his new haircut and dreadlocks gone as well. Guess the lawyers have advised him short hair, tattos covered and designer suit will be a better way to appear in front of a Judge and Jury. Guess the lawyer is earning his pay. I think Bruce Rossemeyer is a special guy for donating dollar for dollar. Hopefully, this idea will carry on with or without Billy Lane in the future. You can never take away the fact that Billy Lane is a well educated man with a lot of great visions for choppers and charitable for children. Shame he made a terrible mistake and drove.

I can’t help to wonder if it were your nephew or a loved one, if you would want them to spend 15 yrs in prison,if the situation had changed their life? I also wonder if things were different and Mr. Morelock had killed someone that night, if the Morelock family would want a loved one behind bars for 15 years, if they knew it had made a difference in their life and changed them? I know that this is not the way it happened, but it very well could have been turned around with his Blood Alcohol Level. I haven’t heard not one thing about BL partying and drinking that way you say he has been carrying on, in your past posts. Just because he is out working doesn’t mean he isn’t having a hard time looking at himself in the mirror or changed his ways. Unless you have some sort of power to be inside his head, you don’t know what he is feeling. I do feel like the Morelock family is due money for funeral costs, pain and suffering etc. Not 20 million dollars. Was he supporting his mother, wife and children, but I don’t think he had a wife or children (not sure about that)
I think a college fund for his nephew would be a wonderful thing and for Mr. Morelocks parents to be taken care of. Sandie, I have read your posts on all the different websites and it bothers me how you change from one minute to the next. You sound like a very bitter and unhappy person. There are alot of victims in this situation and I am not going to pretend to have an answer, like you do. My prayers go out to all involved with this, including you, you seem to be so bitter. I can’t even imagine what the Morelock family is going thru right now, it has to be horrible, but I wonder what Gerald would want them to do right now if he could talk to them.
True their bitter people. I say let the Judge and jury in the criminal case decide what BL’s fate as far as punishment for driving without license and killing somebody drunk. I say let the lawyers and Judge in the civil suit decide what is fair to the Morelock family. I feel badly for BL, he should have learned his lesson in North Carolina and been glad that all he got was his drivers license suspended for a year. I would have learned my lesson from that and from the time I left that North Carolina courtroom, I would have took in a deep breathe and had a burden lifted and been thankful. I did not make the laws. Some laws are unfair. I wish BL the best of luck. BL is represented well. I feel that the Morelock family has the best lawyer in Brevard County. Melbourne, Florida. So they are represented as well as BL. Really al we can do is wait or the trial. The evidence will speak and tell us what happened that Labor Day night. I am sure BL has been advised by his lawyers to cut his hair, cover tatoos and do charity work for the trial. Seem like BL is following his lawyer’s advise and that is what he pays the lawyers to do. If BL had not been driving when he had no license……………we would not have this blog discussion. It started because of BL’s poor decision.

I am reading postings from time to time on here and it looks like some people are missing the point. Mr. Lane broke the law, plain and simple, you or I could not do the same and be on the streets before the ink dried on his booking file.
And to answer Robert on a previous post, I am not law enforcement but a FF Engineer for 8 years so I’ve seen a little in my days on the road.
No one but the good Lord and his dad can tell what is in Mr. Lanes’ heart, I could say he probably has a great deal of remorse and will live with this for his natural life. But no amount of charity work or otherwise can reverse what happened that day when their worlds met on that road, forever linking the two families together.
Mr. Lane should’ve thought before he got behind the wheel and like someone said before, maybe thought about N.Carolina.
I hope this will not be another case of deep pockets buying their way out of trouble, many celebrities do that and skate all too often, much too many peoples chagrine. Cleaning up to make face with the court and the public is another way to divert attention.
And the other thing that bothers me is that some are making a point of Mr. Morelocks’ being intoxicated also, while that is illegal, it does not make a difference in the fact that Mr. Lane crossed the line on the road and struck the deceased. I hope that everyone remembers that when they are thinking about that and their own skins and drawing breath.
All in all I take a saying from my dad “Take coulda,woulda,and shoulda in one hand and ten cents in the other, you could buy yourself a donut.

I knew Billy. I personally knew only one person who, in my opinion, Billy might have really listened to regarding his personal behavior. But that person died in 2004. Many times I had the chance to say something to Billy but didn’t because I believe that I can’t badger a person into taking personal responsibility for their own actions. A person must ultimately decide that for themselves. The guy Billy killed was my cousin, and Byron, as your cousin, I’d do anything I can but it’s in the hands of the judicial system now. With a Father that retired from the Kentucky State Police and at one time was during his tenure a traffic accident investigator upon all fatal accidents and I have a brother practicing personal injury law, I can take a pretty good guess what the other side on the civil case is doing to your brother Gerry and your family. I wish you and yours the best. Be strong. I predict that the criminal case is in the can, the evidence and on scene witnesses will prevail with the very good job done by the FHP. Since this is what court TV would consider “high profile”, you can rest assured that every base is covered. No better lawyer could you have hired in the Space Coast area for the civil case. No matter what, you will never get Gerry back and no amount of money can fill the empty place in your heart.

Crashes are not accidents? Are you saying car wrecks are intentional? If that is true why are the people that have intentionally pulled out in front of me or backed into me in jail? Someone pulled out of a parking spot recently and hit me as I was driving through a parking lot. Did about $3000.00 damage to my mustang. The cop that showed up said "That’s why they call them accidents" after I told the woman I knew she didn’t mean to hit me.
As far as character assassinations, if you have lived a good life, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. I feel bad for everyone involved.

I personally think that everyone makes mistakes. As Cyril said “Billy made some bad decisions, none of which he can take back. Billy, his friends, family & Gerald Morelock’s friends & family will all have to live with this tragedy for the rest of their lives.”
I know that in my life I’ve made lots of seriously bad decisions, and I’m still paying for them today. However, I have been able to take the tragedies in my life and turn them into some of the greatest assets I have. Billy given the right guidance will be able to do this too.
Our role is not to condemn the man, that is why we have courts. Our role is to be there for our fellow man when he needs help.

Let the bashing begin. I haven’t been keeping up but I have a small shop here in austin tx where we work on vintage jap british and american stuff more maintenance lately. I got back into it to pay the bills so I could play guitar all the time and not work for someone else. Back in the nineties I built a lot of bobbers and chops, mainly brits and sportsters. I remember billy’s first bikes in the Iron Horse magazine. I have some of those issues and the first issue with jesse’s panhead also. And this guy Indian Larry who built panheads and rode em. Took a bit of reading to figure that one out. No one out of reading that mag or new york city really knew who he was. I was reading one of billys books that was bought for me sittin on the shop couch and remembered hearing about all this and thought I would go online and check it out. Yes if mr. morelock hadn’t of been drinking he might be alive, and if billy hadn’r been still he might be alive. Something horrible happened. It was innevitable in these situations if you look at the big picture. Consequences are good, bad, and indifferent. Sometimes it doesn’t matter. Your actions kill someone it matters. You ride the lightning long enough and somethings gettin scorched I gaurantee. Will billy say something in public when it’s all over? Sure he will. Maybe he has said all there is for the other family. Is he aware of how fucked up this situation is? I hope he can recognize the common denominator for all the fucked up shit that happened to him the last five or ten years. HIM. he’s the common denominator. He will have to change. Grow up in a sense. It happens to us all eventually. May do something like get sober and help others to get sober. He will defenitely have to live with it. Day in and Day out. If he has any feelings inside at all that should be a tough row to hoe

1)DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE because accidents caused by wrong decisions happen much often under influence and by doing so you may hurt somebody or kill somebody destroy lives of his family members his friends your own and your friends as well as lives of your own family members.
BILLY, there is a lot of destroyed lives of innocent people .Non of these idiots criticizing you is saint – nor me who party hard and rides for over 30 years and just because we was lucky not to kill ourselves or somebody else we do not know how it feels to be in your skin.You was not so lucky that night and unfortunately the fact that lot of people around do the same can not be used as a excuse.It is just the price which sometimes one of us who knows how to enjoy the life to the full got to pay.The real punishment is inside your brain and will stay there for rest of your life.6 years is too much – no time at all would be too little.
2)DON’T DRINK AND RIDE because accidents even caused by others could be much less likely avoidable if you are under influence and your death will destroy lives of your family members,your friends but will also destroy life of the person who killed you lives of his family and friends.
Mr .Morlock ( unfortunately he can not read this comment, but but people like him can ) there is a lot of destroyed lives of innocent people OUT OF THEM JUST ONE WHO DESERVES IT – YOU COULD POSSIBLY AVOID IT if you would not be drinking and riding.There is lot of us who drink and rides, but we was so far lucky enough not to get in the situations where the slight difference between being sober and have slow reactions and ability to make the right decisions fast influenced by alcohol make the difference between death and staying alive,You was not so lucky that night and that’s the price which sometimes one of us who do not play by rules pays.
Just because you are in the shadow of somebody who cares much bigger chunk of the guilt for what happened does not mean you are in all people’s eyes INNOCENT VICTIM.RIP
