They hope they can be up and running in December and make Europe their main target in the semi-custom production market. The company expects to launch 2 new models for 2010. The new owners are Mark Borodkin (CEO), Tim Gueltzow (Director of Sales & Marketing), Robert Martino (Chief Financial Officer) – Hollywood’s consummate anti-hero Dennis Hopper famous for his role in the seminal movie Easy Rider revealed that he learned to ride on a motor scooter and that he and fellow actor Steve McQueen had lost their driver’s licenses and were getting around Hollywood on Vespas before he directed and starred in the 1969 ground breaking movie.

‘We rode Vespas for about four years because we thought we could get around riding on Scooters without getting any tickets. He confessed that he didn’t want to make Easy Rider initially. His favorite pastime? Painting - Harley-Davidson Japan is converting its domestic dealerships for the Buell bikes which it discontinued at the end of October, into service centers that will repair the motorcycles. Harley-Davidson is legally mandated to offer repair parts for seven years but says it plans to continue parts repair services for the next 10 years. By continuing to service Buell bikes, Harley-Davidson hopes to hold down any negative impact on its brand image – Wimmer Custom Cycle has recently decided to end their distribution relationship with Drag Specialties. We are in Milan and you better off running a performance engine with emissions compliance if you don’t want your bike immediately confiscated by the Carabinieris (Italian police). This new model is called “Duu” (Milanese slang for “Two”), is supposed to be produced in limited edition for model 2011, and features the goodies we like to see in this type of bike like single sided swingarm, inverted fork, Brembo brakes, dragster style fuel tank in a very “show me” Italian design package. Price should be around 20,000 euros or the equivalent of US$30,000. The builder is a company called CRS Motorcycles and unfortunately their website is still in construction with no further information. To follow…

In addition it features key features making it superior to some other belt drives. The motor plate and lock up clutch are designed to tolerate the power of big motors. At the same time the clutch action at the lever is eased by use of lower rate springs (how many of you complain of a painful/hard clutch?), while the inertia activated lock up feature keeps things from slipping when you throttle hard. It utilizes a narrow belt for lightweight, better cornering clearance and does not interfere with access to forward controls. Will fit all 1991 through 2009 HD Softails, Dynas and most custom bikes. Does not fit FLH or FXR models. Dyna models must use forward controls or the integrated PM mid mounts. Also sold in polish or chrome. Performance Machine.

After what sounds to me as a fiasco online auction 2 weeks ago, Bruce Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson, the largest Harley Dealer in the world, is at it again starting tomorrow November 20 until Sunday 22 trying to liquidate over $2 million of pre-owned bikes. And not only motorcycles, but also clothing, parts, accessories & chrome sold at 25% to 80% discount! Even a stock of Buell parts at slashed prices. As an observer, how does it sound to you? Do you have the same feeling than me? Like most Harley Dealers, Rossmeyer’s dealerships are overwhelmed with repo bikes (coming back to the dealer from the generation of “6-year loan, no credit check, everybody approved”) and trades taken in to try to reach new 2009 and 2010 bike sales objectives.

All motorcycles will be on display in the secured area at Bruce Rossmeyer Harley Davidson, 1637 US Highway 1, Ormond Beach, Florida 32174. The auctio as I understand it (received conflicting info). On each motorcycle there will be its normal retail selling price. When the sale begins at 9 am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 20th-22nd, 2009, buyers will have an hour to inspect the bikes. Then at 10 am whoever is sitting on the bike when the posted price is slashed will have the first right to purchase the motorcycle at the proposed price. Prices will be slashed one time and one time only to the rock bottom price. To incite you to make the trip to Ormond Beach 2 Harleys will be priced at $88.00 (not a typo). The customer gets the best price up-front, without any haggling or wasted time. The dealer gets to reduce his inventory very fast!

Inventory will include over 300 used motorcycles, including Road Kings, Electra-Glides, Fat Boys, Dyna’s, Heritage Classics, Ultra Classics, Softails, Harley Davidson and other makes and models, even Customs, Kawasakis and Vespas. Financing will also be available, but you need to get pre-approved. For more info, call: 800-642-3464. And if this liquidation doesn’t work as well as expected, like the one of 2 weekends ago? What do you think may happen to Rossmeyer’s Enterprises?

The latest effort to these ends are in the way of a weekend excursion, where they will be in New York city at Indian Larry Motorcycles conducting video interviews and shooting extra images for the issue. If anyone is interested in participating in this, just drop them a line at sourceeditor@comcast.net .They will be in town Friday 11/20 through Monday 11/22, so try and stop by if you can. For directions go to Indian Larry.

The second piece of news in this undertaking is the addition of rare, never seen before, photography by artist and “Art of the Chopper” author, Tom Zimberoff. Tom has signed on to provide additional imagery for the special issue and the work is unbelievable. It is a super huge honor for the staff at Cycle Source to be able to work with him in this capacity. For more information on Tom’s Work go to Art Of The Chopper.

The Indian Larry Issue, “Five Long Years” will be packed full of special content that has for the most part never been seen before. Their will be commentary from people out of Larry’s past that haven’t been heard from, stories of his life that haven’t been shared and additional industry insights into the man they called the Chopper Shaman. This issue will become available at the beginning of 2010 through an exclusive national deal with Barnes & Nobel stores and through a regional south deal with Books A Million. For more information on advertising in this issue or for advanced copy sales go to Cycle Source.

Showcasing the custom parts that you sell on a custom bike is efficient marketing strategy if the bike is extremely cool. Independent Custom Builders do it very well. Few large part distributors do as well, except when one of their in-house collaborators is also a talented builder. Rich Fulk, Custom Chrome’s Product Line Manager, knows quite a few things about mixing and matching the custom parts that he sells to make a factory bike look like a true custom. And since he also got the design and fabrication/assembly abilities he built this very “fast, black and furious” 2009 Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide featuring the “Custom Chrome New Dark products”. For the fast and furious parts of the equation ‘La Muerta Negra’ was modified with an S&S 106″ kit, some Zippers Cams and Thundermax ECM. For the dark part, Rich used the complete line of the ‘King Knurl’ accessories from Revolution and made this FXD-I rolls on RevTech® Midnight Series. Looks to me like the Milwaukee factory should sell it! Inspired and ready to do your own? All these parts and more are available in the CCI Catalog Update that you can see by jumping to Custom Chrome.

Worth introducing it to you because its Builder also won a trip to the 2010 Sturgis AMD World Championship Of Bike Building. Before you get a chance to detail this machine in magazines then up-close in South Dakota, just notice that this very radical lowrider uses an engine whose heads are integrated inside the gas tank (will fuel be pulverized by heat? Hmmm. Or maybe the gas reservoir is hidden somewhere else?). Exhaust is quite interesting, too. Built in Belgium by a guy named Kris and I don’t know more…

We all know that more brick & mortar businesses can advantageously replace part of their showroom square feet by a bigger and better internet presence. If clients don’t walk in, go to them where they are, wherever they are. Logically, Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson, overwhelmed by the number of used bikes they took in trade- in and repos on unpaid loans (at any time they state that they have 500 used bikes in stock), is moving its sales force front of the computer screen. Mike Watts, internet sales manager at Rossmeyer’s state that the company will host 24-hour live vide auction on a monthly basis (the 1st one happened 2 weeks ago).

In a statement he made to the Daytona News Journal I noticed that Mike Watts made 2 mistakes by stating 1- “That we hope to change the way people buy used motorcycles”. Really? I think it’s all the way around. It’s consumers who changed the way businesses sell their ware. Rossmeyer’s, like others, just try to adapt. Never heard of eBay? 2- “That their website(s) have 1 million of hits”. Who cares the number of hits? A hit is not a visit to a website but the number of graphics & pictures downloaded when you open any internet page. If you open a page with 40 graphics or images, it’s 41 hits (one hit for the page + 40 hits for the images). But still only 1 visitor. Multiply by the number of pages visited by the same person and you have a ton of hits for still only 1 visit. Mike, the only important thing is the number of unique visitors, the number of pages visuted and the time spent on each page. Among other things, the reason why the first online auction was not a success is because of poor announcement and poor internet traffic for a company the size of Rossmeyer’s (I checked). It’s what Rossmeyer’s should work on first. Rossmeyer’s Harley-Davidson.

But why not one more time when I get new pictures? these ones shot by friend of the industry Colleen Swartz. I remind you that this custom bike is powered by what Dave mysteriously refers to as a “550 International” engine, a shorthand description of a on-of-a-kind collection of various metric and Dave Cook one-off fabricated components. The engine is based on a stock Honda CB550 transverse 4-cylinder with radically reworked cases to allow the engine to be used longitudinally instead of transversely. In addition to reworking the cases themselves, an auxiliary oil tank and oil regulator was fabricated. The timing assembly is a one-off as is the bell housing and clutch assembly. The transmission housing is an old 3-speed BMW gear case which Dave managed to fit with a BMW R75 four-speed gear set. The shaft drive is adapted from a Yamaha Virago. Cook Custom Choppers .

And of course, Roland Sands having built a few of these custom V-twin sport bikes, he carries some responsibility for such interest. This one uses a hand built frame (including a one-off swingarm working via an under seat mono shock) and is powered by a Road Star 110″ engine using Patrick Racing heads/cylinders ad breathing via a Mikuni carburetor. For a pure sport look the front end comes from Ohlins and Roland Sands built a high flying rear fender and a custom exhaust system following the same lines. No surprisingly Roland chose his wheels next door at Performance Machine, the Judge model in contrast cut, 21 x 3.5″ in front and 18 x 8.5″ in rear both dressed with Dunlop Elite 3 tires (respectively 120/70 and 240/40). Roland Sands Design (picture HRF)

The 2010 Diamondback is a joint venture with Ilmor Engineering, the sick 152″ V-Twin requiring to be massaged by the best engine specialists in the business to become the main sales pitch for this custom cruiser.

And don’t worry too much about such a beast powering your bike. Viper included a proprietary engine vibration damping system that the company claims gives the Diamondback a much smoother ride than other V-Twins with many less cubic inches. Noteworthy to mention are the carbon fiber body (total weight is 610 lbs.), an on-the-fly adjustable air ride suspension system, an adjustable seat (down to 24″), easy adjustable foot controls, all LED’s lights, a sporty inverted adjustable front end, 6-speed transmission, hydraulic clutch, a 21″ front and 18″ 260/40-18 rear wheel/tire setup. Wheelbase is 71″ on a frame with a 34-degree rake (5-degree triple tree). For now the Diamondback is sold through selective Dealers and is not exported. Viper Motorcycle Company.

As you remember the company stopped production of new bikes back in August, then started again production in October for two weeks then stopped for the undetermined future. I also learned that the company attorney has left – This coming week Harley-Davidson will begin the process of selling MV Agusta the Italian manufacturer that they bought for 70 million euros only 14 months ago. The 2 interesting parts of the story are: 1- that Claudio Castiglioni, MV Agusta former owner, wants to give his opinion on the potential buyers. And current MV Augusta Chairman supports his request. Does it mean that Castiglioni would like to buy the company with the help of new investors? I think so. 2- It seems that there is already a line-up of investors and manufacturers ready to bid to acquire the Italian manufacturer. Will Harley make a profit on the sale? I think so, too. And the dollar being lower against the euro than 1 year ago it will boost the potential profit -

100% of the population knows the Harley-Davidson brand, but only 3 percent of U.S. consumers own a motorcycle. So, Harley-Davidson is starting a new communication strategy using entertainment to - as Dino Bernacchi, Director of Advertising, Promotions and Entertainment for Harley-Davison states - ”sensationalize the excitement and thrill of riding to the point of moving people to check the brand out”. Harley, like many other major brands, has used in the past “product placement” in movies, a technique consisting of paying a production company to use/show your products in a film.

But Harley has decided to use this technique as the core of their new marketing push. Of course, it includes non only big screen movies but also TV series, documentaries and video games. According to Harley marketing department, 15 to 20 million individuals in the US would have the desire to buy a motorcycle. In parallel to this strategy, Harley-Davidson is perfectly aware that they need to communicate to younger people under 35 and to have culturally-relevant messages to women , African Americans and Hispanics. For example the domestic Hispanic market is very fast-growing, four times the rate of the general population. For the younger generation SMS (phone text messages) is an excellent medium for marketing and mobile subscribers are interested and receptive to reading offers on their phones. As a matter of fact text messaging has increased 60 percent year-over-year (source Mobile Marketing Association).

So, from now expect Harley products and messages to pop up where you never saw them before, to see Harley reducing or abandoning classic media exposure in print magazines where there are no new readers to convince to ride their bikes and to leave radio that the young generation is not listeing to. Expect to see more and more the brand and its bikes showing up on audio/video digital media (movies, series, documentaries, web, blogs, social networks, smart phones, games), etc. And these new techniques will come not only from the factory but also directly from its dealers. Something new and fresh from Harley-Davidson. It was time that they realize that demographics have radically changed that there is a media revolution going on since 20 years and that audiences have shifted to brand new communication means. I applaud this new “push marketing” strategy. It should have been started years ago, but it’s not too late. Harley-Davidson (picture Cyril Huze).

Although I will never challenge the quality of BMW mechanical engineering, I never been a fan of their motorcycles. Durable, yes, but with designs that I dislike and a riding position which will never be mine (rode a police one in Germany and felt like I was sitting in a small SUV). But I like very much the sexy line of this BMW Motorrad concept six-cylinder with new Cafe Racer lines.

BMW engineers had to conceive the smallest ever six-cylinder and as far as I understand it was done by a combination of a square bore with a longer stroke ratio and reducing the gaps between cylinders, making the engine only slightly bigger than the big 4-cylinders. The bike uses an alloy frame with Duo-Lever and Para-Lever suspensions and six-piston Brembo brakes. Back to the lines, the Concept 6 is beautifully UN-BMW motorcycle by the finesse of its bodywork and mechanical details. Just look at the handlebars and instrument cluster conceived to give you almost as much information as the most recent BMW cars would give you, even on a tap what is your torque at any given moment! Now the question is will BMW Motorrad mass produce such a sexy bike. Cafe Racers need a filiation. BMW Motorrad.

For many custom shops and backyard builders each date is an impossible deadline that they still will meet at the last minute because these events are probably some of the most important to promote your talent and your business. As a matter of fact I don’t know if there are any household name builders who didn’t participate at least one time (me, several times) to these big custom motorcycle meetings/exhibitions/entertainment.

So, follow the deadlines you must meet to show your custom work . Pomona, CA January 9-10, Sacramento, CA January 16-17, Charlotte, NC January 23-24 (a very big one), Knoxville, TN February 6, Columbus, OH (Invitational where the top winner for the year will be crowned) February 12, 13, 14. More info/registration by calling 800-962-9857.

The last? The company is trying to recover some money by having its intellectual property sold as the business is liquidated through bankruptcy proceedings. American IronHorse filed a petition for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings on April 30. It had assets of $1 million and liabilities of $10 million.

The company is putting for sale its trademark of American IronHorse, of model names (like Slammer, Legend, Texas Chopper, Tejas and Outlaw), patents, Internet addresses, parts designs(?), customers data, etc. Streambank, the company in charge of selling these American IronHorse intangible properties expects to close the process in January 2010 or before. A total of 15,000 motorcycles would have been sold by American Ironhorse. I am sure that their owners would like to see somebody interested by such a sale. But my opinion is that the brand image is so damaged that the intellectual property is no more an asset but a huge liability. Anyone crazy enough out there?

We will never know, but this just released F4 Superbike shows again and again that the Italian manufacturer is at the top of its game. Serious money issues, for sure. But I place MV Agusta well above all sport bike manufacturers for design and technology.

The advertising theme of the F4 Superbike launch is “Can Perfection Be Improved Upon?” Engine was redone with the radial-valve, inline-four engine producing 186 horsepower, 12-horse more than the the 2009 version. Body has been completely re-designed to improve performance by lowering weight by 22 pounds.Multiple Sport and Rain engine control maps, Marelli 7BM ECU controlling eight fuel injectors, , variable-length intake manifolds and traction control. Exhaust gases exit via four square under seat outlets. Suspension is a fully adjustable inverted 50mm Marzocchi up front and a remote reservoir rear shock from Sachs. Brembo monobloc calipers clamp down on dual 320mm front discs. more at MV Agusta. http://www.mvagustausa.com/

Although it was not built to beat one of the AMA or FIM records, this bike built by Leroy Thompson Choppers has already the stance and some of the basis to make it a machine able to line up on one of the Bonneville tracks in September 2010. Will builder Scott Webster prepare it to make the transition from show bike winner to land speed record holder? I don’t know, but if I was him, I would…Rigid frame got a 27-degree rake with 3″ stretch, an inverted front end from Meanstreet, and for now holds a 96″ Harley engine with turbo begging to be tweaked even more. Two 23″ Leroy Thompson wheels roll the bike and Scott will have no change to make on his Brembo brakes to decelerate this bike after the speeding mile. To follow…Leroy Thompson Choppers (pictures HRF)

Because the Triumph Bonneville and TAG Heuer Monaco are both timeless masterpieces, celebrating their respective 50th and 40th anniversaries this year, both companies have joined forces to create a one-of-a-kind Bonneville Heuer motorcycle. As you can see. this one-of-a-kind commemorative bike is painted up in the classic Gulf Oil blue and orange scheme and will be used for promotional purposes. If you like the bike as much as I do, perhaps a phone call, an email, a letter toyour local Triumph dealer will convince the factory to put it in (limited) production.
