Hey- I just traded in an older Road Glide on a 2010 at Rossmeyers becaase they gave me the BEST deal. I actually shipped my bike there for the trade because their deal was so rich.

Here’s my take on the state of the union:
1. Big Dog is done
2. Victory is next. Polaris can’t cover it with ATV sales in the tank too
3. HD will figure it out and refine their line up to meet needs of people who buy

$500 over is HUGE, trust me. Just try getting a trade in value that doesn’t make you cry from a metric dealer right now. They won’t even take your bike- period. They are flooded with bikes and the Japanese manufacturers are drowning too.

The HD trade in deal is on all trades 150cc and up.

When it comes right down to it, Harley is simply pricing themselves out of the market. The new bikes are flimsy and way overpriced for value received. Further, the market is flooded with people dumping used bikes and there is no point to spend thousands for new over and above what you can buy for a good used bike.

Economics will eventually always prevail over the allure of a product. It just takes time for the consumer and his habits to catch up with market realities. sadly, the HD folks are not going to realize this untl it is to late

Because of the current economic situation (crisis for some) my job is now 35 miles from my front door. And also due to the need to down size expences I’m doing 90% of my commuting on my 2005 Road King. And my eyes are now wide open! Harley could offer to add $3000.00 to the value and I would have say no. I have made several handling/performance upgrades over the last year to cover the shortcomings that were unnoticed before. The next tourer I buy will have good handling characteristics, ground clearance, good power to weight ratio, and maybe water cooling off the showroom floor.
The Road King will remain in the family but unless things change it will represent the last new Harley I will ever buy.

Finally, custom builders are starting to realize that swingarms were invented a long time ago, and they work! First came Sucker Punch Sally’s Swinger and now Brass Balls one-ups them with an FXR! Great news, and here’s hoping we see a lot more customs that are meant to be ridden.

So I should trade in my $10K Road Star that is totally paid off to get $3K in trade-in value plus the generous $500 that HD is offering to take on a note for a $20K HD. Hmm, let me think about the economics on that one for a second………………..uh No!

Hey Cyril…………………….HD is going to do all this in the middle of one, if not the largest Defects Recalls, of the largest Defects Recalls in their history which starts 12-14-2009.

Keyboard Commandos……..you better take a very serious look if you are thinking about buying a CVO, Screamin Eagle, or Touring Bike.

In the catagory of industry news; couple of weeks ago Big Dog Motorcycles had another round of “furloughs”. I believe this round of cuts involved long time “go to people ” in their respective departments. I hope it wasn’t just to save on salaries. When you are trying to win the game you need your best people on the field. Difficult times and decisions for those running the game.
