i have a brand new 140 cc jaileng pit bike motor in my 1970 honda ct 70 minitrail, and the kicjk idler shaft snapped due to complications and i cant!!!! even get the part over here in the us….ughhhhhhhhhhh i hate my life and this stupid lead ban.

The Bush administration signed this into law, so you shouldn’t be defending the Republican party because they backed him. So he not only bankrupt America due to a war with the wrong country, he also indebted us over a trillion dollars to Communist China. Maybe this was a little extra payback to Communist China for helping him out. After Reagan fought so hard to destroy Communism, Bush sells our country to them. Remember, every time you shop at WalMart or buy a Chinese knock off you are helping support a Communist Country. Russia was nothing compared to this.

Sounds like an oxymoron to me.

DoD Engineering data standards and DOT J2008 data standards were being development at the same time. At that time, in an hour long phone conversation with an EPA official over j2008, On board-II, and the, then proposed Dyno smog testing, i got an ear full on the philosophy and arrogance of the EPA.

What i heard over the phone was a bureaucrat totally out of control, Trust me this clown and his agenda was no Republican. He was, at best a Big government Liberal control freak.

Near as i can figure the EPA is full of career govt. employees totally out of control.
Don’t see any connection with Republicans there…..????

just add another warning to the bike . Its the parents problem not the gov. Of course the products shouldn’t be here in the first place if they aren’t within the set lead limits from china. THATS BECAUSE WE DON’T HAVE ENOUGH IMPORT INSPECTORS (WORKING MEN) instead of chiefs in the White House.

This stupid piece of legislation hastened the closing of a couple of shops in my area, already hit hard by the economic slowdown. Although I’ve heard rumors of a few places that tried to weasel through by not selling the said bikes to children under 12…they sell them to teenage siblings, instead. Ditto for adults buying 70cc quads for their own use. Another case of good intention becoming poor execution, much like the Economic “Stimulus” Bill.

I’m not too sad to see the cheapo made in China/Taiwan/India bikes pulled off the floor, with the possible caveat that these products do get quite a few new riders into the sport. However, the Big Four do get quite a few parts from these low cost asian suppliers too!

Please, keep an open dialog with your local lawmakers and other elected officials. We need, more than ever, to strike a balance between over-legislation and under-regulation. I think somebody around here once said something about protecting our future without losing our past.

The sad thing is this isn’t about the damn paint, it is about the valve stems, the batteries, the crank case and so on. It doesn’t matter who the hell put the bill out, the problem at hand is it’s out and the government isn’t willing to give these people a time line that is reasonable to accommodate such law. I researched this a little and heard a comment to the fact that there is no legal age definition of child. This ban affects everything not just motorcycles, it affects anything marketed to a child the motorcycles are just the most affected at this time, just wait and see more will come up.

When we bring in products from China or anywhere else, it should (or need to conform) to US standards, but this is the deal–there are alterior motives behind this, anything that the gov’t can do with little or no static to take away the rights of off-highway vehicle enthusiats, they will do in the name of “safety”, or “the enviroment”. The enviro-nazi’s have been trying to do this to us for a long time, and now with a compliant white house and a dem-controlled house and senate, they have the ammo to do so. Yes, Former Pres. Bush was in office when this was signed but keep in mind, who was controlling both houses then? Just some things to think about. As I have said many times about BOTH parties, they are not working for us anymore, and that is the real problem, they have their own agendas now, and people they owe favors to so that is their first priority, not any of us “slack-jawed working folk”. Businesses selling ATV’s/Dirt Bikes are the ones that will suffer greatly, so much for looking to stimulate the economy. Mr. Nicker, perhaps you are right, maybe it is time for another fucking tea party as you put it, this time lets throw some hybrids in the bay, wouldn’t want to waste a perfectly good H-D or Victory/lol. Now I will shut up…

My point was that if you make a part or whatever and send it to China or wherever, then you have to fill out a ROHS form and sign it , stating that you haven’t used lead based anything and if you have, how much, etc. Why should the Chinese or whoever have an advantage on us by not providing the same quality as our products which cost more because we have to use non lead-based paint. As for children, I think parents should protect their own, not the government. And I thought this was a bike blog too, but lately it’s been more about politics. If anybody out there is using lead- based paint on their bikes please let me know and I’ll add your name to the list, right under China.

the dumb ass goverment has no idea
how about going to a youth national race,look at the money
the people spend to have there kids there,
lets look at that
40,000-150,000 or more for a motorhome
2,000 -15,000 for a trailer
2,000-10,000 per bike and most have 2-4 bikes
100.00 of dollars in gas to travel
plus food,parts,gear to protect there kids,beer for dad (keeps
miller in business which keeps jobs here)motels at local towns
all over the usa,this is the just a start of it.
how many jobs will be lost from this it will go from the top to
the bottom,all i guess what washington many more houses foreclosed
i thought wasington was tring to fix the slump in the nation
but looks like to me they are the ones causing the problems.
this is what i would like these dumb ass people to do go to the white house check the lead content in that building i will bet you
there is more in that old building than in any motorcyle ever seen
then move mr.obama and his family out to a motel and stop the tours
because kids walk thru there every day and they can’t be exposed to the lead,if they checked washington would be condemed.

Heard all of the arguments and I have said my piece, but this is fact: the lead content that is involved in the makeup of youth ATV’s/Minibikes is insignificant. This is being used to ban the sale and use of youth ATV’s/Minibikes. The gov’t, in no particular terms is doing (or trying to do) the job of the parents. If Mom and Dad want to let their son/daughter go trail riding or participate in any kind of sanctioned racing at the Amateur level, then it is their business, not the goverment’s business. Selected gov’t agencies along with other anti-OHV enviromental organizations such as Earth First have been and still are attacking the off-road enthusiats and industry in one capacity or another for over 25+ years now and it is obvious w/ the current administration in the White House and the current party that control both houses are going to support those agencies and see that not only off-road vehicles are banned, but they will be taken away and and all the public land available to ride them on as well. Freedom is absolute, you cannot be selective with it to fit within your personal agenda at the time. I started on a bike out in the desert many, many years ago. I want the opportunity to do so with my kids. The gov’t has no fucking business to tell me otherwise…

Lead painted motorcycles have about as much of an impact on kids as SUVs have on global warming. But that’s just MHO.

This doesn’t just apply to Chinese products or the other “New Asian” machines. This applies to the big 4 Japanese OEMs and just about any aftermarket manufacturer that makes P&A for children — which mostly applies to off-road products so you’re talking helmets, roost protectors, etc. So this isn’t a problem for only those who stock “these Chinese pieces of crap.”

Read the details. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) applies to used, current and non-current ATVs, motorcycles, and snowmobiles and related products such as collectibles, apparel, parts and accessories.

There are two provisions in the law, one covering lead paint and the second covering lead content in the total product. The content provision is especially difficult because it applies to items such as steel frames, valve stems, batteries and cables, etc.

No, this is an issue that affects a wide swath of the industry.

When was the last time any of you painted a bike with lead paint. We haven’t had lead based paint in this country for a long time and paint and people are better off for it, even though it costs more. Lead based paint will fade and expose lead to the surface, batteries are contained and pose no threat to youngsters. I see this as a leveling of the playing field and not unecessary government control. Whoever stocks these Chinese pieces of crap gets no sympathy from me.
