Who ever thought Buick would sell in China? Its about time US companies create new markets rather than waiting until they’re saturated.

Using incremental sales in fringe markets to show “upside” is a distraction from the bigger picture. Selling 80 bikes in Romania isn’t going to change the big pic at all – if anything it stretches resources and supply chain management to ridiculous lengths – for what? To attentd to a market that is a “loss-leader” from any perspective you measure it.

How about investing in and insuring that the HD brand stays relevant in a fast changing global culture and marketplace? Now that would be something exciting to learn about…

Put some fancy valve caps on the wheels, and the street kids of Bucharest will steal them at every red light in the city
And now without joking : once the Romanians will have discovered the Harleys and figured out that new models are waaayyy beyond their spending limit, some used bikes will be stolen in Germany, France or Italy to surface again in Romania with newly stamped VINs ! That’s how it goes with luxury cars…

I guess this will be a change from when I was in Europe in 2007. I visited Harley World in the Netherlands (Holland for some of you) and they complained that Harley would not sell them enough bikes. Their showroom only had a few bikes and to top it off it was the weekend of Super Rally 2007 in Bussloo. They tried to buy my buddies Fatboy.

Romania, how interesting. We lost thousands of dollars in Romania. Hopefully the credit cards used for the purchases belonged to the customer. In 6 months they will learn the card was stolen and HD will not have the money, but the customer will have the merchandise.
