We have been useing Equal for 4years to get away fron the weights. Europe did away with lead

Yes, lead in the ground is an enviromental hazard….. Oh wait, where did it come from again?

New federal mandate- extract ALL lead from the earth immediately.

Much better idea than actually TESTING the groundwater…..

Hmm- haven’t seen any zinc wheel weights around, I’d like to see what that looks like- provide an example, please.

The goo idea works swell….. Oh wait, another federal mandate for tire pressure monitors, oops to that idea……

It’s not the fact that lead is a problem in the environment.
This issue is simply the mechanism by which this supposed “systemic problem(?)” is to be managed.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to provide a tax incentive for industry to come up with an alternative strategy. Hell, if we get new stuff stuck to our wheels at the tire show, who’s gonna know about it? Certainly not me. I don’t know about you, but i don’t scrutinize the weights that get put on my car.

Instated, what we get is a bunch of officious a-holes “launched a campaign.”
How necessary is that…..????
What ever happened to doing a job without insinuating yourself on the world at large….????

After working for the Fed over 35 years, can’t recall ever “launching” anything.
Just working my ass of to do what needed to get done.

Only politicians “launch” and “campaign.”
Is the EPA a place where we need Politicians…????

I agree. This actually makes some sense—the alternative—steel or zinc. It’s already common practice in Japan and many other foreign markets. The cost? Negligible.

Whoa, this legislation actually makes sense – ever see the pile o lead at a tire place? or laying beside a tire machine in a bike shop, waiting to get dumped in the dumpster. I get this….ok, just dish up a decent alternative, will you, o’ great tire industry?

All i know is that we have got to find a better solution that that Slime/liquid balance crap, I used that shite once and it made one hell of a mess in my shop when i replaced that tire.

It’s all about water contamination guys… the weights can, and do come off cars, trucks, and bikes. They end up in storm drains and eventually the municipal water supply (drinking water). The same water supply that irrigates lots of cropland and thusly, our food.
They removed lead from gas years ago, fishing tackle in recent years, and household paint too. Lead doesn’t affect adults unless rather large amounts are ingested… but young children suffer serious brain and nervous system problems even with very little exposure, that is why this is happening, and it should have happened years ago. There are numerous substitutes that will work just fine and this will cause no real problem for us keeping our wheels balanced.
In my opinion, this is the only smart EPA mandate in a decade.

I can’t remenber I’ve lost one off those things in all the years (34) I ride a bike and drove a car.
They came off only when I did go to the garage to get new tires.

Jezus, there are some kind of people taking everything out of proportion………..

What’s next???
“the rubber to fly off your tires , then get ground down, with the toxin finding it’s way into the air, in the water supply and even our farmers’ fields! “and…….. and…….

At least this does make a little sense, (unlike most EPA crap). And it will be easy to substitute another material, but likely it will cost a little more than good ol’ lead.
