Sub standard fasteners should be a continuing worry when you build anything. And that includes all types of fasteners. Recently came home with a box of #14 x 21/2 inch screws that didn't quite feel right when holding the shanks, while driving them with a drill motor. These things were small enough to snap the heads off, which would have really messed up a project. I looked op the American Standard spec for #14 screws. Sure enough, all screws miked our several thousands too narrow in the Base Diameter. This happened with screws from two different sources (OSH and ACE) and not just one box, but the entire inventory of #14s at each store. Each time, i took the screws, Machinery's Handbook, and calipers back to the store. Showed-em the American Standard specification. Miked the screw and showed-em the discrepancy. The OSH manager said thanks, she would report it back to their supplier. At ACE the manager didn't even understand the problem. Her response was "we just sell screws, we don't sell 'standard' standard." The concept that a "#14 screw" should meeting the "advertised" #14 standard was lost on her. Worse, she didn't understand the potential liability to me, had i been making something under contract, to a "national specification." The lesson i learned is, don't count on the markings on a box if the job is important. caveat emptor -nicker- Counterfeit fasteners are a real problem in today’s Global market.
